Four-volume boxed-set edition of The Lord of the Rings in hardback, featuring Tolkien’s original unused dust-jacket designs, together with fourth hardback volume, The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion . Includes special features and the definitive edition of the text. Since it was first published in 1954, The Lord of the Rings has been a book people have treasured. Steeped in unrivalled magic and otherworldliness, its sweeping fantasy has touched the hearts of young and old alike, with one hundred and fifty million copies of its many editions sold around the world. In 2005 Tolkien’s text was fully restored – with the full co-operation of Christopher Tolkien – with almost 400 corrections, the original red and black maps as fold-out sheets, a fully revised and enlarged index, and for the first time a special plate section containing the pages from the Book of Mazarbul, making this set as close as possible to the version that J.R.R. Tolkien intended. This Diamond Anniversary reissue of the prized boxed set marks 60 years since the first publication of The Fellowship of the Ring. These hardback editions feature Tolkien’s original unused dust-jacket designs from the 1950s, reworked for this edition, and some additional text corrections. The four-volume boxed set includes The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion , a unique annotated guide to the text, fully updated since its first publication in 2005, and is a book which will enhance the reader's enjoyment and understanding of one of the most influential books of the 20th century. Review: A quality set: worth it for $70 in 2025 - This is a beautiful set. The Lord of the Rings here is split into three books, making it easier to read. The drawings on the dust jackets are what Tolkien wanted for them himself- drawn by him, too. The colors compliment each other wonderfully and give each book vividness. The paper quality is very good, very smooth- these books are HEAVY for their size. Paper thickness feels average for the main series, but it is thinner for the companion book. The type is average size, and very readable. Sewn binding, too, which a story of this caliber deserves. The box is of sound construction. The companion is a wonderful bonus. The $70 I paid for this set is well worth it to me, because it was obviously constructed with care, love, and quality. Review: High Quality Edition. - So, I had been considering this purchase for quite a while. I had the big red single-volume version of the trilogy I got as a gift 35 years ago, and which remains a treasured part of my library. However, I want to re-read Lord of the Rings and this time I wanted individual volumes. I settled on this set for several reasons: updated version of the texts, I like the dustjacket artwork (by Tolkien himself), and the reader's companion is a nice bonus. What I was completely surprised by was the high quality of this set. These binding are all nice and tight, and appear to be sewn. The boards are covered in a nice textured paper, not the smooth covering typical of a book club edition. The last new Tolkien book I bought was the standard edition of the Nature of Middle Earth last year. What I am getting at is these book are much nicer than that, in my opinion. The set I got was bound in Italy, as opposed to the China, where even some of the reprints of the slipcased Deluxe editions of other Tolkien works are bound. One reviewed felt the paper was thin, but I disagree. It is thin enough to keep the size of the volumes manageable, but not so thin that I could see through the page when reading it. The dustjackets are high quality as well, paper but backed on the inside by some kind of film that adds strength. The slipcase has a nice fit, but these was enough room to accomodate Brodart dustjacket protectors on each of the four dustjackets.

Beautiful hardback set
This is a beautiful hardback set, of which I am very satisfied. The dust-cover for each book is very well designed and pleasant to look at. However, the dust-covers feel rather flimsy and easy to break or tear, so I would not recommend reading the book with the dust-cover still on it if you value keeping them in good condition. The book behind the dust-cover is plain black, but on the spine it has nice gold-colored text. It has a very quality look and feel to it. The size of the book also feels very good to me.. Not too thick, but the text is perfectly readable. If you're like me, the feel of the physical book in your hand is just as much part of the enjoyment as the story within the book itself. These fit the bill. Very happy. I look forward to keeping these on the shelf for when my boys are older so they can enjoy them as much as I have!

A Timeless Gift That Captured Our Teen's Imagination
This Christmas, we decided to gift our teenage daughter the Lord of the Rings Boxed Set, and it turned out to be a hit that went beyond our expectations. As parents, we were looking for something special that could offer her more than just momentary entertainment - something that would ignite her imagination, challenge her, and introduce her to the rich landscapes of literature. This set did just that and more. From the moment she opened it, the quality of the boxed set impressed us all. The craftsmanship of the box and the presentation of the books themselves are exceptional, making it a beautiful collection that she was excited to dive into. As she delved into Middle-earth, we saw her enthusiasm for reading rekindled. It's been a joy to watch her immerse herself in the adventures, the lore, and the profound themes that J.R.R. Tolkien masterfully weaves throughout his work. This gift wasn't just a success for its entertainment value; it has been a meaningful addition to her personal library, one that encourages her love for reading and sparks discussions about the story's depth and intricacies. For any parent looking to gift their teenager something memorable and enriching, this boxed set is a treasure.

Top Quality Set!
This is my first time reading LOTR and I’m nearly halfway through book one after finish The Hobbit over the past few weeks (75th anniversary edition which I also recommend). The quality of these books is really excellent! They have a heft and obviously next level build in construction and materials that is obvious upon handling them. I can see what someone else mentioned about thin pages and concern about ripping them unintentionally, and it is true that they are a bit more thin than the 75th anniversary The Hobbit book but that is not to say that the pages are poor quality thin or extremely thin (like my hardcover Dickens and Brontë sisters collection I would characterize as quite thin), they just aren’t super thick pages either, if that makes sense or helps? Anyway, I highly recommend this as a top quality set for yourself or any confirmed or potential Tolkien fan.

New, Very Good (Not Quite Mint) Condition Hardcover 60th Anniversary Boxed Set Edition
I'm a fan of Tolkien and his works and lately have been interested in purchasing copies of really nice anniversary editions. I turns out the one's that I have been looking for have been getting rather old (and have been out of print for a while), the 60th Anniversary hardcover boxed set included. I've looked around on other sites and usually finding these new would run upwards of two to three hundred dollars, so this one coming in at around one hundred (when including shipping) was a good price. Mine shipped from Poland where apparently proper packaging hasn't been invented yet! The set arrived in a box (a bit too large for it) beat up from the trip, with only a bit of crumpled up paper inside to keep it from sliding around. Upon arrival, the paper was at this point flattened and the set would slide easily in the box. Despite this, the set actually arrived in pretty decent condition. The outer casing had a few minor dents on the edges but the corners were in good shape so I don't think these were caused by the shipping conditions from Poland to the US. There is a curve/lip to the set cover that exposes a bit of the dust covers on the first book and the readers companion; on the first book it has left a light blank impression on the dust cover but no creasing. On the reader's companion this lip has creased the dust cover, but no black marking is left on it. This is the extend of the flaws on the as received product that is discernable to me. The set was received in the original plastic wrapping with the publisher's sticker on it, though as you might imagine it was a bit worn and coming off in places, which I attribute to the age. The books themselves were in excellent condition; pages crisp with the new-book smell, sharp and well-defined corners on the hardcover binding... It's just a beautiful work of art. The set cover has served it's purpose by protecting everything inside of it. Since I purchased this set specifically for reading, the flaws that I received it with are perfectly acceptable to me. I have other sets and editions that sit and look pretty on the shelf which are in better condition, hence the 4-star review, but overall, this is a great work of art that I look forward to enjoying for years to come. If you are looking for the hardcover 60th edition new in very good condition (but not mint-condition), especially for reading use, I would recommend this. Your mileage MAY vary on the shipping aspect, however--I just want to mention this caveat so you don't forget.

Best Quality Version
Looked forever for a good hardcover edition of Lord of the Rings. Checked every local bookstore I went to and they only had flimsy paperbacks, or a hardcover of the hobbit. If you’re looking to get into Lord of the Rings or read the books, this is the way to do it id say. The pages are good quality, the paper cover are very artistic, nice, works as their own bookmark, AND the hardbacks are sleek black, with golden lettering. Either way the books are so nice to hold it makes me want to read them more, and the quality of it really helps immerse you in the classic story telling. This is my first time reading, I’ve never seen the movies somehow and I have not needed the story guide but it seems cool. Anyways, Greatest read, greatest edition, if you’re checking reviews to see if it’s worth it, it is. And that’s coming from a college student.

Beautiful
I've finally had the pleasure of getting this amazing trilogy in its mother tongue (plus the Companion book), and couldn't be happier of this beautiful Edition. I'm already greedily reading The Fellowship, and I will finally have this work of art engraved in my mind as intended by the Professor.

3 stars cos the box is broken
Was excited to buy this box set. But the box containing the books seems very fragile and delicate. Nothing I do could prevent it from tearing 😩
