This is a WONDERFUL book! Initially I purchased it several years ago to help me with my descriptive writing. This thematic dictionary will boost your creativity to another level because as it states it is: "The book for when you know what it is but not what it's called." How do you look up a word when you know only it's definition? A dictionary will offer you the meaning of a word and a thesaurus will provide a list of synonyms, but this book will lead you directly to the word itself! It's a essentially a very clever thesaurus AND reverse dictionary. There are sections from Animals and Insects, Architecture, Art, Clothing and Fashion, Electronics, Environment, Finance, Food and Drink, Furniture, Human Body and Mind, Language, Law, Magic and the Occult, Medicine, Military, Music, Occupations, Performing Arts and Broadcasting, Religions, Science, Sports, Tools, Transportation, Weapons and a heavy section on Words and Expressions you should Know. This book is well over 600 pages and you'll want to read every single one. This is one of the best book investments I've ever made and I've been buying books since I was 7. I'm 51 now so... You will NOT be disappointed. I ABSOLUTELY recommend getting this.

A couple of weeks ago I was searching for a different kind of thesaurus recommended by Tina, a cousin-writer. I put the book in the shopping cart and spotted a Descriptionary. The price was right and my interests piqued so I bought that one as well - you can never have too many books. When the two books arrived I knew they were different immediately - all six-pounds worth. The Descriptionary has everything indexed so that it is easy to find. Each main title has smaller sections that cover almost anything you could imagine. The first main title is Animals and Insects, then under that there are sections like Animal Groups and Insects and Spiders; under those there are even smaller sections. It has been so much fun to read that I stay up later at night to read, just like a regular dictionary. Here are some of the main titles:Architecture, Art, Clothing and Fashion, Electronics, Environment, Finance, Food and Drink, Furniture, Human Body and Mind, Language, Law, Magic and the Occult, Medicine, Military, Music, Occupations, Performing Arts and Broadcasting, Religions, Science, Sports, Tools, Transportation, Weapons and lastly, Words and Expressions You Should Know.For example, under the main title of Military there are several sections, one of those is Air Force and Aircraft. Under that it lists things that pertain to that like "aeromedical evacuation - The transport of patients to and between hospital facilities by air" and "dumb bomb - any unguided bomb."The book is 711-pages long and at every turn you will find something to interest you. I love this book.

Bought it used and it is flawless, except for very minor wear to edge it could pass for a new book. Looking into the book I think it is going to be a great reference book and an enjoyable read. It reads much like a dictionary but categorized in themes (topics). I am happy with this purchase.

I was expecting descriptive photos of the words.The front cover is the only part with pictures.The old adage applies..don;t judge a book by it's cover....Bob Sullivan

As a writer, I really needed a book like this. Not only does it fill the hole and help me find the word I needed, but it gives me new ideas because of the way it's organized by theme.A great resource for anyone who does any writing of any type.

I would love to have given this book a thumbs up but it was stolen from my front door. I have the e book and it's awesome but wanted a hard copy. Would recommend it to everyone who is a writer
