I bought this for my wife who is very involved with a historical society. She tell sme it is a great book and recommends it to anyone seriously interested in history

I strongly recommend "Why Old Places Matter" . I was unfamiliar with the author until a colleague (fellow architect) suggested this book, but I'm so glad that I took the time to give it a read (and buy it!). The author juxtaposes beautiful narration with breathtaking photos that makes this tome much more than the ordinary table book. By the time that you're finished with the book you can truly answer the question: why old places matter. It left me reminiscing of all of the places that meant a lot to me. Mr. Mayes has surely earned a new fan and I can't wait to read his next offering.

This is an essay on why old places matter. I agree with the author and thought he had great reasons why historical places were important. The photographs on the ebook were bright and beautiful.

I purchased this book in preparation for a lecture by this author that I attended.What a letdown.The publishing quality is poor, with extremely thin almost newsprint paper, but the content is where the disappointment really takes root. The question "why old places matter" is repeated ad nauseum, however there is no real meat to this book. The simple answer is "because we like them". I don't need a book to tell me that.This was a well-intentioned purchase that I regret. What a waste.
