The Upanishads

Wonderful! Worth reading!
Awesome translation of Upanishads. It has major Upanishads: isha, katha, brihadaranyak, chandogya, shvetashvatara, mundaka, mandukya, kena, prashna, taittiriya, aitareya and other minor Upanishads. I like it very much. I'll suggest if someone is looking for upanishads, this one worth reading.

Great Content
Content is good. But it's better to read all Upanishads separately. The author didn't cover all the things properly. Best suited for beginners. Paper quality was average. Overall a great book worth reading. Still, I recommend that you read each Upanishad separately. This book is like "All In One."

Not an easy read!
I bought this as I felt Dewan towards it! 50-60 pages into it, I have few thoughts. Please take or leave them.1. It appears to be layered and very philosophical read. With mentions and references to great philosophers of all time. This actually makes Interesing but also wandering into the woods. It goes into layers and layers and layers. Which makes it bit confusing lengthy read for a newbie.2. It's good and deep, if you have all the time in the world or some previous insights.3. It's not an easy read. Though it does get Interesing in btw n every now n then.4. Hymns translated in English somewhat don't flow superfree for me.5. If you are getting started, it's good to get started with some which easy easy to digest.

Live a life differently
A book with treasure.A book that can shape your life. A book that can shake your life. A book that helps to live a life differently . How nicely and simply upanishad explores the basic necessities of life, that really amazed me. Thank you Sir, for making it possible writing such a book in such a lucid way.

Priceless treasure narrated perfectly by Jacob Needleman.
Priceless treasure of ancient wisdom! The Upanishads fill in so many holes left by a Bible that was compiled by the Council of Nicaea in the 4th century. The Bible, as we know it, was compiled so Emperor Constantine could convert the pagans and he did NOT want to give them too much knowledge! The Upanishads discuss the impersonal aspect of God, while the Bhagavad Gita reveals the personal aspect of God through Lord Krishna and his disciple, Arjun. Both Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita must be studied. Only then are the holes in the Bible filled and everything set in proper context.Jacob Needleman is a master narrator and has the perfect voice and delivery. I wish this were available on iTunes!

The Song of the Upanishads
When it comes to translation, there are two kinds of accurate - one is to focus on the ideas, the other on the feeling of the text. This text - as all fo Easwaran's - focuses on the feeling side, and thus opens the beauty of the Upanishads to new readers, while re-inspiring those who have encountered the more intellectual translations. It is the best place to begin a study of the Upanishads, and no good library of Hinduism should be without it.I took off one star because some of the subtler meanings are not presented nor even suggested - though the language is so good, really only a half-star deduction is merited

Really Remarkable
This particular publication is the best one. There are several others that have been compiled but they do not have the same information. I would recommend this one over and above all the others. I dislike publishers that republish work and leave out some of the text that was in the original publication as the author intended it to be.I cannot say enough about the content of The Upanishads, it is simple, unadorned beauty and wisdom. Eknath Eswaran did the world a favor when he translated and wrote this book.

Excellent abridged version
On Upanishads:Excellent read, puts you new lines, way beyond your day to day thoughts. Katha upanishad was the most interesting and captivating as I found the narration very good.On the translation:Translating a centuries old document into English is a challenging task. A word by word translation would be disastarous. Search in the web for Upanishads and compare it with the translation by the author - Eknath. Eknath Eswaran has done a wonderful jobOn the commentary:Some of upanishads do not need any comments are they are very self-explanatory (thx to the excellent translation). But some of the upanishads are very difficult to relate to, and probably needed more commentary.

He is a great master. But
He is a great master. But, being at the height of spiritual vision, he assumes, without validation, that an average person also has a high level of spiritual understanding and vision.
