Although this is a crime novel, in the sense that there is a crime at the center of it, it is a very untypical one--it's not about the pursuit of a criminal or any of the standard tropes of a crime novel. Instead, it is an often humorous and psychologically penetrating study of a group of people inhabiting a Buenos Aires boarding house, in the mid-1950s it seems. There is also a Rashomon-like plot element, hearing the same events as perceived very differently by different witnesses. The Kindle edition is nicely readable, without too many typos, and it was not too difficult a read for this intermediate-level Spanish reader, despite many words and expressions distinctive to Argentina/River Platte Spanish, almost all of which could be found in the excellent downloadable dictionaries.

Am expecting to use with my advanced Spanish class. I think it will be challenging for them. Something contemporary will enable us to discuss themes introduced in this novel.

I read this for a Spanish class in college and enjoyed that it was both easy to understand (as a non-native speaker) and an engaging plot.

I found the narrative to be uneven as it switched from one character to and other. I was disappointed in how it ended. I enjoyef his other work Ceremonia Secreta much more.

Loved it. A real page turner. The author really keeps your interest in this murder novel until the very end.

If you are buying this book for reading in your Spanish class, this is probably NOT THE WAY TO GO. It may be a good price, but the other version is the one that contains the study questions and is abridged appropriately for learning the language.Simply if you're buying this book for the fun if it, then yes... it would be the way to go but I spend money on this thinking it was the correct one for class and it wasn't. MAKE SURE YOU CHECK with your teacher prior to purchasing this copy!!

Excelentes personajes, un argumento inteliguente y una trama con suspenso. Marco Denevi siempre vigente, muy bue escritor.Altamente recomendable.

This required from a university course. Quite a breathtaking story. For those that can read Spanish, it is a great book.
