Great for Newbies
I know the basics (by basic i mean bare minimum) of photography. This book kept me engaged the entire time. He made everything very easy to understand and i love how he put in pictures and descriptions of exactly how he got a shot. He even shows you the photos throughout the editing process which helped me put names to things i liked/didn't like in my photos, which is something I've had a hard time with! Definitely recommend.I also watched his workshop on youtube (as someone here suggested), and that really brought everything together! Love, love, love.

If you’re looking to find new ways to push your photography creatively with color and lighting without killing your budget, get this book. He shares some honest tips and insight on how he approached lighting and editing for shots throughout the book and encourages you to experiment and explore on top of his techniques. Looking forward to implementing everything from this book into future projects. Also, if you don’t follow him on Instagram, you should. Super nice guy and shares what he’s working on.

Good info, even if its not your style
Though I have no interest in emulating his style, his images are beautiful and well executed. The author takes you through his set ups, explains himself well without being overly technical, and does a fine job keeping it readable. A lot of post processing information as well. Its a pretty quick read, and you'll certainly learn something along the way.

Gelled light photography for speedlight shooters
Absolutely loved this book and keep it handy, I needed something to get me feeling creative for studio portraits as the days get shorter and I expect to do more studio than outdoor work. Wanted to broaden my horizons and this offers a lot of avenues for that within the realm of colored light.

Making Folks Ugly
There are many books that deal with the use of color in photography but the author of this book claims it is unique in dealing with using color in the shadows of portraits. I suppose it is.Fancher’s work is dedicated to studio portraits taken with flash or continuous lighting that mix different contrasting colors. The effect is created by adding color gels to the light sources, and aiming and distancing the sources in such a way as to create unusual colors. Typical of this coloration are bright orange skin tones with deep blue shadows. It’s hard to distinguish features in this lighting. Fancher teaches you how to position lights and adjust their intensity to achieve these effects. He shows additional permutations including dragging the shutter for colorful blurs, adding objects between the light source and the subject, and lighting with projectors. The pedagogical technique is to show the lighting setup for a picture and then go through each of the steps to achieve the effect. He also shows how to use Lightroom to enhance the effect. Ultimately we are shown the final product. There are also so called galleries where additional images using similar effects are shown. The author must expect the reader to have a good understanding of cameras and lighting because there is little basic instruction in these topics, other than to mention the existence of a circular softbox that one can use with a ring light.I certainly found the effects the author creates unique. I’m just not certain who would want to use these effects. The folks photographed looked positively ghoulish. Perhaps some high fashion client might like the look, but the unusual colors seemed to mostly mask the fashion. From all I’ve said, you can guess that I didn’t like the results. I’m not certain what these effects are supposed to achieve. There is no mention of the use of color for any other genre of photography than the weird effects described. However, if you interested in that sort of thing, this book might be for you.Note: The publisher provided me with a review copy of this book at no charge.

Hands on techniques for color flash photography (i.e. color gels)
Excellent book detailing different techniques to add color to flash photography. This was very motivating and the best thing is that I already had all the gear needed to accomplish these techniques thanks to the minimalist approach of Nick (some books feed your GAS, gear acquisition syndrome, but thankfully not this one!). I suggest also watching one of his workshop on youtube (~1h30 long) to complement the book.
