111 Shops in New York That You Must Not Miss: Unique Finds and Local Treasures

Too many shops that you DO want to miss
It's not that this is not a "good" book because at some level, it is. There are lovely photos and the descriptions are interesting and thorough. It's just that it is really not a shopping guide ... so if that is what you're looking for, pass on this. It is like another 3-star reviewer put it: it is a book to check out of the library rather than own. That's because for any given person, there will be far too many shops that will not interest you. After all, who needs a book with bugs, a saddlery, cigars, museum of sex, kids haircuts, neon signs, needlepoint, belly dancing, children's high end clothing, anarchist books, lingerie, holistic pet care, antique cash registers, model trains, the Asian Society, billiards, and Gothic Renaissance items? There are definitely some real finds in here but it is so eclectic that you are going to end up passing on most. It's cool but not useful. Perhaps if you live in Manhattan you would own this? If you are flying in for a few days (as I am), however, I don't think you are going to get much out of it. No disrespect mean to the authors. Clearly they put a lot of thought and work into developing the the book.

A true eye-opener!
For most visitors to New York, shopping is a major part of their itineraries. But this periodic visitor is more interested in New York's architecture, parks and water scenery than shopping, and thus this book was a major eye-opener. It is astonishing just how many interesting stores there are in New York, even for those who have no intention of making any purchases. New York actually has shops devoted exclusively to items as specialized or as far-out as porcelain, peanut butter, pickles, sexy lingerie, macabre oddities, sportswear, bizarre musical instruments, anti-establishment books, chopsticks, Gothic wear, sake, fountain pens, Scandinavian candies, vintage cash registers, smoked fish, magic paraphernalia and supplies for magicians, dollhouses, cheeses, chess, coffee and tea, rubber stamps, model trains, cookbooks - you name it! The only gripe, apart from some minor typos, is that the authors/editors did not see fit to include double the businesses! It is worth taking several days just to explore these shops!

The one book that you must not miss if you're visiting New York City!
I cannot imagine a city that would have more books for tourists than New York City. But this one can replace them all. As an ex-New Yorker with children living in Manhattan and Brooklyn, we visit frequently, and thought we knew everything there was to know about shops in the neighborhood.Turns out that out of 111 shops detailed in this book, we were only familiar with a handful of them. This book is well written and beautifully designed with one shop per page, making it easy to navigate and keep track of where you've been. We drove from Martha's Vineyard to Mexico in January, visiting friends and family along the way, and we took a dozen copies of "111 Shops in New York..." along as gifts. Everyone was delighted as this book is historically interesting even if you're not planning to visit in the near future.

I felt this book was a bit disappointing – 90% of the stores are already places that are well known and on the beaten path. The other 10% are funky or kinky or things that most people would not be interested in at all. I thought they were included to make the writer seem like a hipster – as though they had a secret insight to places no on would be a aware if not for them. For the most part if there is not a single thing in a store that even if offered an item for free I would not take it, then the store is not worth my time especially when the city is chock full of delightful shops. I was puzzled by some at the supposed views of New York City residents that claimed they had no idea the shops existed – they must not get out much. Browse through this book for free at the library.

Super for guiding you to must-visit shops
I go to NYC at least once a year and love it. This book has tons of information about shops that you might not know even if you lived there. There are so many shops and areas of NYC that it's not possible to know where all the great ones are, but this book can surely help find them in "the greatest city in the world" (borrowing from Hamilton!).

New York is the most diverse, exciting city of the world and Susan Lusk and Marc Gabor add to it's it's intrigue with shops you would miss if you didn't read this "more than shopping" guide. Great gifts for all who love New York and a must for those who want a totally fun shopping experience!

Great Book! The author's descriptive nature made me want to visit each and every location. I found some new gems, and was brought back to those that I already know. All and all a very informative book.

she was really pleased with it
Bought this as a present for a friend heading for a birthday trip to New York, she was really pleased with it. From what I saw of it , it was a useful, inspiring guide with key information regarding locations. The only criticism that occurred to me was that the binding was a bit 'tight' for longevity as a guidebook. It does seem a lovely present book, maybe not a guide people would necessarily buy as a run of the mill guide .

Frisky and inspiring New York guide
We had such fun using this book - in fact we structured our whole trip around the intriguing things listed, there's lots to read and lots to get excited about when you're at that planning and anticipating stage of a trip.....the style is pithy and pacey - suggestions for all ages and interests - following some of the ideas gave us some truly memorable experiences - highly recommend .

109 Shops I would miss?
Beautifullly produced with great photos but was full of antique shops which was disappointing. Somehow I expected it to have more varied, maybe a bit quirky type shops. Maybe useful if you were planning a very long stay there but as a guide for short stay not what I expected.
