The stuff of nightmares!
It's not the original and it won't do what the original did for horror but what it does achieve is to bring the greatness of John Carpenters Halloween back for a modern day audience. As a fan of Halloween I've seen the franchise rollercoaster up and down more times than a yoyo but fans always want more. Michael Myers is a legend that symbolizes our inner most fears and gives us release from a reality which is far scarier than any horror film. We still need to be scared and Halloween touches on all of our nightmares and uncertainties but with in the safe environment of our own home were darkness can be looked upon at a safe distance. Where there is light there is dark and the two run side by side as Laurie Strodes light has gone or has been lost into the darkness of The Shape which haunts her. She needs to end her suffering by ending Micheals Evil and saving her family in the process or forever be imprisoned by the memory of Halloween night 1978. The return to Haddonfield 40 years later is eerie as it feels so similar to the first film almost like its waited for us as we have lived our lives and grown older somethings stayed the same and are just standing there until the right moment to reveal themselves................Spooky thoughts! And theres a lot of attention to detail in this new Halloween film by the director David Gordon Green who has never made a horror film before unbelievably he has done such a good job. To wrap it all up this is a good and solid horror that many of us feel is a modern classic with its roots in the original film becoming the second favorite Halloween inside Halloween like a dream with in a dream. Unpleasant dreams to you X

A great modern slasher, but not a great Halloween movie
I will start this review off by saying that i am a Halloween fan, and the original is one of my favourite horror movies of all time. I was excited for the 2018 sequel, even if i felt like it was not needed, though i tempered my expectations based on some of the disappointing remakes/reboots we have seen over the years.Halloween 2018 is a great modern horror/slasher movie, but it is not a great Halloween movie. Now people may see this an think 'how is that possible'. Well i can explain with a little help of some spoilers.Halloween 2018 is well acted, well shot, the kills are overall great and the soundtrack is amazing. Jaime Lee Curtis reprises her role as Laurie Strode here and steals the film in many ways. She is convincing in portraying a woman that has been haunted by the events of the first movie and as a Sarah Connor like badass at the same time. James Jude Courtney is the best Michael Myers since Nick Castle, and given another chance he could even surpass him. Michael is menacing and brutal in this movie, and is the the closest to the original portrayal in any of the sequels. Andi Matichak does a good job as Allyson, the grand-daughter of Laurie in this movie, and Judy Greer is fine as Laurie's daughter. This movie is well shot and blends well the gore and brutality of the Rob Zombie movie with the subtlety of the Carpenter original. The scene where Michael wanders through the houses and kills two women all in one take is very well done and one of the stand out moments in the movie.Despite all that though there are some issues. The comedy in this movie is sometimes forced and misplaced. The twist with Doctor Sartain does not lead anywhere and merely acts as a plot device. In fact there are a few contrivances that lead to nothing such as Allyson's fall out with her boyfriend leaving her without a mobile.Where this movie disappoints though is within a Halloween context. Michael never went around in the first movie and just murdered people. He chose Laurie as a victim and stalked her and her friends throughout the movie before finally going for the kill. This movie has barely any of that. Michael does not stalk his victims in this movie and just seems to kill randomly. It could have been any random killer in a mask and it would have made no difference because what separated Michael from the rest was sadly missing from this movie. This results in the pacing being a little off and all over the place at times instead of the slow burn of the original. The simplicity is missing, and even though you can not fully replicate that with a modern desensitized modern audience, there are ways to do that and keep some of the brutality. I think with the kills they do it well, but the movie lacks atmosphere and that is the strength of the original and even Halloween II.If this was not a Halloween movie then i would be giving this a higher rating, but when it comes to sequels you can not help but compare them to other entries in the franchise. This movie elected to be a direct sequel to the original, meaning if you want to follow this timeline you need to ignore the other movies. The issue is that this movie is no better than the 1981 sequel which despite having issues of its own felt like a Halloween movie. In fact i prefer Halloween II to this, and think 2018 is the third best entry and that is not far ahead of H20 which handled Laurie's character slightly better even though it feels very 90s.Halloween 2018 has a lot going for it, but there are frustrating elements that prevented it from being as good as it could have been. I could talk for hours about this movie because there is a lot of good and a lot of missed opportunities at the same time. I often think about how i would have taken this story and what i would change and keep to give this a more Halloween feel. That is not where i wanted to be with this movie, so despite being an enjoyable experience it does not live up to it's potential. 7/10

An almost perfect follow up to a film that has already had so many sequels.
*** Minor Spoilers Ahead ***I can honestly say that reading the articles about this film prior to its release, I was dubious and a little nervous. The idea that every film that occured after the original film had been retroactvily erased from existance as far as the this new film is concerned seemed so much of an abuse of power that I almost did the stupid thing of not bothering with this film. I should know by now that listening to “journalists/reviewers” is a bad thing as they usually have some alterior motive behind their review or article. The concept that Blumhouse and Carpenter developed was a masterwork. I am amazed that it hadn’t been thought of before. The idea that Laurie (Jamie Lee Curtis) Strode had spent the forty years after that Halloween night preparing herself and her family for what she saw as an inevitability - Micheal Myers back on the streets one day.We aren’t hampered by scene after scene of flashbacks of what happened, the few flashbacks that did happen were crucial to the plot and would have made the film a lot worse had they not been there. The whole cast are very good and take us into modern day Haddonfield. I have to mention Jamie Lee Curtis once more, just because she is... well... Jamie Lee Curtis. The things horror fans need to know about this film.1. The kills are well filmed and are plentiful2. The score to the film is classic Carpenter - nothing is overblown or out of place.3. There are a couple of jump-scares that will get your heart racing and remember why the original Halloween became the classic of the genre it did.I really want to give Halloween more that just the five stars, but Amazon tell me I can’t. So, I’ll just say it. This film deserves more thann 5 stars... once you have watched it, tell me you don’t agree.
