Perhaps the most important book anyone has ever written about psychiatry
I read all 450+ pages. The author carefully documents the harm done by all of psychiatry's so-called "medications" and electric shock treatment. I have purchased extra copies of this book and given them to others.

brain disabling treatment
This is an amazingly researched book, extremely informative, and thorough. It details the history of each psychiatric drug and its acceptance and side effects as well as why doctors prescribe them. The author has access to all the hidden information, the failed trials that are swept under the rug, and all the less than pristine tactics employed by the drug companies in their effort to secure profitability. It is an eye opener as to the influence of drug companies on the treatment decisions of psychiatrists, and it describes how blind psychiatrists are to the harm they are causing to patients with the use of these toxic drugs. It will give you very uncomfortable information and make your blood boil with outrage. Dr Breggin shows amazing honesty and courage.Where the book fails for me, it is in offering a solution, because its premise is that drugs are poisons and should be avoided and that every mental illness can be treated with therapy alone. I am quite sure the latter is not true, and drugs are sometimes necessary. What is quite true is the blinding of doctors to the effects of their drugs, and their inability to sort out symptoms from side effects once the patient has been medicated. All in all, an amazing source of information on drugs and how psychiatrists think,a must read, but no clear solution for intractable problems.

Marriage Saved
After years of dealing with and caring for a spouse who had fallen victim of prescription writing psychiatrists, I was immediately drawn to this publication when I found it referenced. Dr. Breggin confirmed what I had been suspecting for months, if not years; my spouse was no better off for all the drugs prescribed...and she had become a non-functioning person as a result of taking those drugs. The author details the terrible side effects of commonly prescribed psychiatric drugs, and points out how the prescribers, psychiatric MD's, routinely ignore and fail to warn the patient and the patient's family of the downsides and long-term ineffectiveness of those drugs. Dr. Breggin gives specific examples and references to commonly prescribed psychiatric medications, elaborates on details of their testing and approval processes, and offers proof that the drugs are often more harmful than effective and that they tend to create the very symptoms that the patient is trying to eleviate. He also points out that the prescribers never accept responsibility for a patient not recovering, and consequently they just change medications or add additional drugs to the "cocktail" when symptoms persist. After digesting the information in the book, we have developed a plan for withdrawing my spouse from the drugs while maintaining a relationship with the psychiatrist currently

Dr. Breggin Summarizes the Pathetic State of Modern Day Psychiatry
Dr. Peter Breggin has stellar medical credentials, but he is a voice in the wilderness when it comes to exposing the shocking state of psychiatric drug prescribing as well as other more barbaric practices which do so much more harm than good. He is of the belief, that humane interaction with patients, particularly actually listening to their concerns, and getting a medical history before throwing pharmaceuticals at them, is the way to really help them. This is a companion piece to Dr. Breggin's more recent book, How to Get Off Psychiatric Drugs Safely. Although I was intimately familiar with this topic, having lived through an excruciating experience with several primary care and psychiatric professionals, anyone interested in the topic in general will find this book eye-opening.

Riveting. Accurate. Trustworthy. Saddening
I have never found so much credible annotated data along with more than 40 years of caring for patient's without drugs. This gentleman and his wife are warriors that should be on NPR, YouTube and passed all over the internet in a chain letter. I buy his books and give them out like candy just to support what he has done. What I don't understand is why the Attorney Generals of all states are not slapping these CEOs in irons for homocide. They are our most dangerous 'Weapon of Mass Destruction'.

I bought this book as an adjunct to reading Dr ...
I bought this book as an adjunct to reading Dr. Wesley Muhammad's " Understanding the Assault on The Black Man, Black Manhood, and Black Masculinity." The revelations made by Dr. Breggin are disturbing. They support 100% the position of Dr. Muhammad with respect to part four(etc) of the above mentioned book.

Must reading for anyone taking or considering any prescription psychiatric drug.
Peter Breggin is a psychiatrist who has broken with the medical psychiatric world and blows the whistle on its reliance on pharmaceuticals and the companies that manufacture them. The book is full of facts, scientific studies, and references. That, however, does not hinder its readability. Breggin has a marvelous talent for getting across his point and presenting relevant information to support it. He has taken a line-in-the-sand approach to psychiatric medications. He refuses to use them for any and all patients. As he documents, they are nearly all ineffective, and he explains well why patients often believe that they're helped, when in truth, they are not.He also describes the range of effects and how frequently they occur. If you think that severe, life-threatening and destroying effects are rare, then you must read this book.Breggin takes the reader on a tour of how the FDA operates and how the pharmaceutical firms hide the lack of efficacy and risks. He also explains and documents how deeply the psychiatric profession is beholden to Big Pharma, including the American Psychiatric Association, leading doctors, and journals.Breggin decries the medicalization of psychiatric disorders, thoroughly debunking the modern paradigm of mental problems having a biological cause, including the so-called "chemical imbalance" that is so routinely used to justify the use of psychoactive drugs. He clearly documents that there is no truth to these claims, that study after study trying to find such a connection has always failed. The book may seem a bit self-serving at times, since Breggin routinely references studies and articles for which he was the author. However, when one considers that he's been a ground-breaker in documenting the bad effects and ineffectiveness of these drugs and that a large percentage (documented to be about 75% of all psychiatric journal articles) have been directly affected by pharmaceutical money (beyond simply gifts, such as prescription pads, adverts, and lunches), it's more surprising that he's been able to reference many other studies that support his views. Of particular interest is that he has reads the studies, and is often able to show that they actually document the inefficacy and dangers, rather than the positive conclusions reached by the authors. He explains the techniques used to hide data that don't support the pharmaceutical firms' desire to market the drugs, and also how they conspire to hide negative data. The patient is not left without a place to turn - though it becomes clear that patients are at great risk if they simply accept the drug treatment that is most likely to be pushed on them. He is a practicing psychiatrist who claims to have significant results with all types of patients, including those diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Exposing the Dangers of Modern Psychiatric Drugs
This book is a very clear and careful medical expose of the serious dangers associated with the prescribing and administratiion of psychiatric drugs, and the results of such coercive treatment as is practised today by modern psychiatry. This excellent book joins a growing volume of such professional criticisms of today's whole psychiatric system.
