Four Stars
Great text for H&P, especially if you're using Shadow Health. The only thing missing is PEDS.

helpful book
The book was clear and conscise with its ideas. It was easy to follow and understand. However, I felt that I was reading all over the place to find information pertinent to my class.

Not great, not terrible
There are quite a few typos in this text. For example.. ABC's of melanoma -- E is described as elevation (should be evolution); "caliper" motion is written as "caliber" motion (repeatedly). Can be confusing if you're learning the material from the first time from this text. If ordering this text, be sure to order the most recently printed as I believe they corrected many of these errors.

DO NOT PURCHASE THE E-TEXTBOOK IF YOU WANT ACCESS TO ONLINE CONTENT.
If you are hoping to get access to the online content with the purchase of the e-textbook, you will be disappointed. I paid $85 for the e-textbook on Amazon thinking I would be able to access the online videos; I was not. Then JB Learning wanted an additional $30 to be able to access the online content.

Osteopathic in Name Only
I commend Dr. Kauffman and his colleagues for taking on the dubious job of writing a new H&P examination textbook. A more concise and updated text has been needed. As an educator of osteopathic medical students, I am always on the hunt for good textbooks. Overall, the explanations and photographs are not bad, but there are many images that are not precise enough for medical education. There are many excellent portions of the text, but if it is to be used as a standard text in osteopathic education, then it would be advisable to have had a specialist in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine – Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (NMM-OMM) as a contributor and co-editor on the next edition.I was frustrated and surprised to find essentially nothing about an osteopathic structural examination, nor even adequate portions of it incorporated within the text. With the exception of an evaluation of the ribs, there is virtually nothing listed in the index (or text) that would guide the student to the evaluation of overall body asymmetry, a spine or structural pelvis evaluation, scoliosis evaluation in an individual older than 4-years-old (other than a cursory comment about rotoscoliosis on p 352), TART and associated tissue texture abnormalities, leg length evaluation, the autonomic reflexes, etc., etc. Even the landmark notations in Figure 13-46 has incomplete descriptions: “inferior angle of the scapula at T7” - We teach a more precise description for palpation in that the inferior angle of the scapula is at the spinous process of T7, and T8 vertebral body and transverse processes. The “spine of the scapula at T3” – T3 is at the level of the inferomedial edge of the spine of the scapula. If one follows the angle of the spine of the scapula to the point where they meet on the spine, it would be at T4 (which is how I was taught in the 1980s).Nowhere in this text can I find mention of, or an explanation of, an osteopathic structural examination or details of how this is performed. The structural examination is foundational to a good osteopathic history and physical examination and should be incorporated seamlessly into the patient’s basic evaluation. Two excellent examples of this may be found in Chapter 22, Osteopathic History and Physical Examination, in Foundations of Osteopathic Medicine, 4th edition, Michael Seffinger, DO, Executive Editor, and in two articles written by Sara Sutton, DO, FAAO, titled An osteopathic method of history taking and physical examination: Parts 1-2, published in the 1977 AAO Yearbook (American Academy of Osteopathy.)General H&P textbook - four starsOsteopathic content and incorporation into a good osteopathic history and physical examination - one star.I have no doubt that there are many NMM specialists who teach in Osteopathic Medical Schools who would be happy to help edit this book and include osteopathic content.Eva Shay, DO, C-AOBNMM and C-AOBFP
