Shimano PD-EH500 Bike Pedal

I got these for my transition between road biking - where I've been using SPD pedals for years - and mountain biking where I was finding that I needed/wanted to be clipped in for some thing and unclipped for more difficult terrain. First, the pedals are top quality. They are incredibly easy to get into and unclip from. They are light and just built well overall. The flat side is not as big as a normal flat MTB pedal though so be aware of that. If this kind of pedal is what you want, you will not be disappointed. Having said that, I've switched to flat pedals on my MTB. In the end, I got tired of trying to decide whether to use the clip side or the flat side. The clip side is great for that feeling of being solidly connected to the bike but it was holding me back from tackling more and more difficult terrain. The fear of not being able to unclip if I couldn't manage a section was getting in my head and making me not try things. It's too hard to anticipate the proper side in dynamic terrain. Plus, it was too hard to find the right side if you had to start on a hill or some difficult patch. I switched to regular flat MTB pedals and have been much happier. Knowing I can get out has given me much more confidence to tackle tough sections and I've enjoyed riding them much more. Given the proper shoes, my feet stick pretty well on the pedals anyway so it's not as bad as it could be. My feet do come off every once in a while but overall, I'm glad I went flat. That's not the fault of these pedals though so I stand by my high rating.

I already had Shimano clips for my shoes (which I use on my Trek hybrid road bike), so I wanted something versatile that could also work for my spouse, who doesn’t have clip-in shoes. These pedals are perfect! The double-sided design gives us both options: I can clip in for a smooth, efficient ride, and my spouse can use the flat side with regular shoes. I’ve only used them once so far, but I can already tell they’re a game-changer. My ride felt so much smoother, and my feet stayed in one place on the pedal—exactly what I needed. If you’re looking for a reliable, versatile pedal for both clip-in and casual rides, I highly recommend these. Perfect for Zwift and beyond!

Recently got these for a Giant CX bike, have put a lot of miles into both sides of the pedals over the last couple months, and I really like these pedals. Riding clipped with the include SH-56 cleats is great. The tension is easy to adjust +/- and at the middle setting I've chosen I don't have any issues with clipping in quickly (even in city riding where there are lots of stops) or with coming unclipped. The flat side with the included pins is pretty grippy, I ride with soft EVA foam running shoes and have no issues with my feet coming off even on some pretty rocky terrain. With that said if you're a flat shoe MTB racer these aren't the pedals for you (they're not that big a platform), but that's not who they're for anyway. My bike has a 1x SRAM Apex drivetrain meant for riding clipped in, so one thing that will kick my feet off the pedals is shifting to the smallest 1 or 2 rear cogs, but I can't really blame that on the pedals. (Maybe i need to upgrade the crankset!) Basically it a joy to pedal on either side. At first the pedals flipped over a little too easily but now they tend to mostly stay on whatever side I'm using. Riding around the city I prefer clipped just because you can leave one pedal clipped in at red lights and stops, and then take your time clipping the second foot when you take off. But, I've definitely mashed on the SPD side in flat shoes to get away at a light, and the opposite, pedaled with my cleat on the flat side. So yeah, these pedals are hybrids so they're never ideal in any one situation, but in general I don't find the pedals flipping to the "wrong" side to be annoying. Installation is easy. You do have to screw all the pins in. (If you haven't taken pedals *off* a bike before, well, I hope you have a pedal wrench. Or my method of a standard wrench + a hammer + swearing works too.) Then you can install these with either a hex key or pedal wrench. I'd recommend you use some standard waterproof grease on the threads (to keep out dirt and make it easier to get them off again).

I’ve been biking my 4 mile commute to work and 12 mile workout ride home for about 10 years now. I’ve been using Shimano’s venerated PD-A530 on my Raleigh Detour Deluxe. I just recently built up a touring bike (using an old steel Trek Jetta frame) and wanted to get similar pedals since I switch often from biking shoes to regular shoes. These were new and much cheaper than the A530s but what caught my attention were the set screws they use as spikes on the flat side of the pedal to increase traction on the sole of your regular shoe. Pros: •Color- The pedal generally matches the black color of my Trek. •Clip strength- I don’t need these to hold my shoes super tight because I’m constantly clipping in and out of the pedals. The clips on my old A530s can be adjusted to panic-inducing tight. I’m going to replace those with these and save the A530s for when I get a serious mountain bike. Right now, they are set to their MAXIMUM tightness and it’s about the same tightness as the A530s on my other bike. •Increased traction on the platform side via set screws- This was a big selling point for me. I have slipped off the flat side of A530s more than once. This improvement, for me, makes these pedals perfect. Cons: •Color- The pedal is not exactly black. It’s more a very dark (midnight) blue. This is just a nitpicky complaint. •Clip strength- If you are a serious mountain biker or a roadie who prefers SPDs because the shoes are easier to walk in, and you need something that holds tight, these are not for you. The clip tension tops out long before panic-inducing tightness. •Missing important parts- This is the reason I didn’t give it five stars. The set screws that are supposed to fill the 16 threaded holes that make them act like traction spikes WERE NOT INCLUDED. I am not alone in this as other reviewers have also stated that their pedals did not come with set screws (a.k.a. grub screws). Fortunately for me, I work as a forklift mechanic and have friends in the industrial applications industry so I bought some myself. If you are missing yours, or you want to get some spares, the setscrew is M4 X 0.80 (4mm diameter with a pitch of .8mm between the threads). I don’t know how long the included set screws are supposed to be but I went with a length of 6 mm because it allows you to tighten the screw so that it will not wiggle out and it sticks up far enough above the surface that it gives good bite into the sole of your shoe for better traction. Overall, I am exceedingly happy with these pedals but I’m honestly a little bummed that they didn’t include the set screws.

Great addition to my endurance road bike SL-6. I installed the pd t8000’s on my fFX-6 hybrid carbon bike and road 5years about 15k miles. I initially purchased another set of the pd t8000’s for my new road bike but clipped the sidewalk twice within two weeks. The endurance road bike is shorter and corners harder. I then installed these pedals. I was reluctant at first as others indicated the platform was too narrow. I have a wide foot and have no issue with these. These are great pedals and because they are narrower I have not clipped the sidewalk!

My son wanted to try clipless pedals for mountain bike racing. This is a great option for him to learn on, so he can choose to ride with or without the clips. He said they are easy to clip in/out, and he really likes them. They are durable, comfortable, and a great value for the money.

If you enjoy or are seeking a “two sided pedal”, this is an excellent and affordable choice. I put about 25,000 miles (over three years) on my first set of these pedals before buying a new set; and I didn’t buy a new set because the old one wore out, I just wanted a “shiny new set”. Getting in and out of the clipped side of the pedals is smooth and easy, and they secure very nicely to my shoes. The non-clipped side of the pedals have many protrusions and efficiently keep my shoes from sliding off the pedals.

Been riding MTB and road bikes with Shimano clips ever since they started making them and (a long time). I like these the best so far. Have to install pins but they work well and threads are coated snd seem secure after first ride. Came with cleats but I used my old ones (very old) and getting in and out is easy. Adjustment of pedal tension for clips is simple and noted on pedals. L/R labelled, which is nice. Some do not label side/thread. I like the size of the flats. Large enough but not insanely big. Nothing I would change other than having pins preinstalled but some may not want pins and would likely increase cost. I bought a second set for my road bike.
