10TH KINGDOM (2 DVD 9 + DIGITAL)

This review is for the Mill Creek blu-ray, which was released in 2015. This release is a huge improvement over past dvd efforts. It is offered here in widescreen. It has not been cropped or zoomed from the original 4:3 television airing; you are here seeing much more information on the sides than ever before. It also features a remarkable isolated score option which spotlights the nice and underestimated music by Anne Dudley. An isolated score option for a television mini-series is very rare and much appreciated. The picture quality is much better than the dvd but the CGI effects were probably not prepared in modern 1080p; they look upscaled from 720p. The resolution for some of them is not very good, but that's the way the movie was shot; no effort was made to reshoot or upgrade them. The quality for the rest of the scenes is about 10 times better than previous home video efforts--it's night and day. Black levels are terrific; color saturation is just right and you will see a much sharper picture than ever before. The mini-series was aired on five different nights; therefore there are five different episodes including beginning and end credits. Previous dvd releases had edited the five segments into a single ten-hour movie. This blu-ray restores the segments to their separate five episodes as originally broadcast, including the proper credits. This release has dropped some minor dvd features from the original release including the 10 kingdoms map and cast and crew click-through features. It does still include the "Making Of" featurette. The mini would appeal to anyone a fan of fantasy films in general, Lord of the Rings, Once Upon a Time and so on. The film is good for familiy viewing, as it was a Hallmark release. There are a few slightly gory scenes with the Troll king, minor violence with arrows hitting their marks, scary moments with the Witch and so on; it would probably be rated PG if it were released to theaters. Probably best for children ages 8 and up. This release is highly recommended to those wishing to upgrade, or for those wanting to see the mini-series for the first time.

I bought this Blu ray disc thinking it would also come with a digital copy. Well it did...but not like others. The redeem the digital video you have to go on to the website of the people who own the rights of this tv mini series and cliam your digital copy there...and watch it there, It's super buggy, unplayable most of the time, and just not worth the hassle. The site looks like no one has done anything with it in years and runs slow. Wish the digital copy was on Vudo on Movies Anywhere so it would be watchable.

I have loved this movie since the first time I saw it, but until recently could only find it on DVD. I was so thrilled to find this blu-ray! It's incredibly long, so prepare yourself for a marathon type movie session. But it's a great mix of all these different fairytale stories that we all grew up with. Throw in a young woman from New York who gets sucked into this crazy world, a prince turned dog, leather obsessed trolls, and One smitten wolf.....well, you've got quite a story!I watched it with my 4 year old son recently and he loves is just as much. It's really a great movie for the whole family.

Really enjoyed this series and highly recommend it! I had seen it when it first came out as a tv mini series and was really glad to see it came in Blue-Ray especially for the "behind the scene" interviews at the end about the characters and location. I really anticipated a sequel and am disappointed the sequel project was dropped probably because it was filmed "before it's time". Maybe it will be picked back up and continue this series now that it's been 15 years!!

I purchased the Blu-ray version of 10th Kingdom. The movie was as entertaining and delightful as ever. This has been a family favorite since my husband and I watched the miniseries many years ago when it first came out on TV. This is the 3rd or 4th copy of this movie that we have purchased. We owned it first on VHS Tape, then on DVD, and DVD again (This version had fewer discs). Now we own it on Blu-ray (It has SUBTITLES!!!) The movie was clear and bright. I was able to see details in the costumes and scenery that were a blur in earlier formats. I did not have any trouble with the menus or the soundtrack. This was money well spent!

this particular movie has been a family favorite of ours since our kids were little. the three principal characters Virginia, Tony, and Wolf, respectably played by Kimberly Williams, John Larroquette, and Scott Cohen bring life to many of the Grimms fairy tales that are highlighted in this particular story about nine mythical kingdoms that the three principles find themselves trapped in, and their desire to locate the magic mirror that will take them back to the 10th Kingdom of New York. Daniel Lapaine plays Prince Wendell who finds himself turned into a dog by his wicked stepmother who has her eyes set on ruling the nine kingdoms. There are trolls, dwarfs, goblins, all sorts of characters who make up this world and even snow white makes an appearance. Transferred from DVD to Blu-ray, this movie now takes on a whole new dimension with its beautiful photography, stunning landscapes, and castles that make up the settings that are characters find themselves in. A long movie at 447 minutes, but a wonderful weekend getaway, so grab the popcorn, close to drapes, kickback and find your way to the 10th Kingdom.

A true Blu-ray buy. I'd owned the original DVD set and can honestly say this is MUCH better. It is presented in full widescreen with complete picture upgrade and restoration (at least appears so to me). Considering the original broadcast (which I had recorded on VHS) was in full screen, this is quite a delight. The picture is much clearer and clean that either the original broadcast or the DVD and comes with the original special features. I haven't watched those yet, so I can't say for certain if they were up converted, but generally special features aren't. If you're a fan of The 10th Kingdom, this is a definite buy.

This is not a review for the actual series but for the Blu Ray. In summary - if you have the DVDs then do not bother, the Blu Ray release is NOT an upgrade.Setting aside the title animation which was clearly created for SD video broadcast, the actual footage is very clearly not from a genuinje HD source. Sadly the other normal benefit of an HD release for older video sourced content, a better and more virbrant colour palette (wider gamut), is also lacking.It's upscaled well, but you still can't get back the level of detail that isn't there in the original material. Things to look out for, if you are curious and picky, are facial hair and skin countours which are all qute flat and lacking and detail. You can't quite read small text even when it should be in the focal plane and so on. Some scenes even looked worse and seem to have been "recovered" from a secondary source.

I watched this when it first aired in 2000 and was so enchanted by it. It's magical, a bit cheesy and full of whimsy that people of all ages can enjoy. The acting is fantastic - the main cast are supported by a superb ensemble cast and the running theme of fairy tales is so fun.The DVDs themselves are excellent quality. They come with Dutch subtitles but these can be turned off in the main menu.

Fantastic, just as good as I remember when I watched it when first broadcast. A wonderful fantasy series in the same vein as Once Upon A Time with a brilliant Ango - American cast (maybe a few Canadians as well?). Each episode is approximately 90 mins. long so plan to watch it over a few nights. A superb mix of drama, comedy and adventure. Looks and sounds great in HD. Well worth getting a multiregional Blu-ray player to watch (Region A version bought).Highly recommended>

Finally! I was able to pick up this fantastic series at a reasonable price but there are problems that other fans should be aware of.The Dutch release comes in a nice Digipak (gatefold cardboard) with three discs with very similar artwork. Discs one and two have about 2 hours and 45 minutes of the show with disc three having about an hour and a half (along with a 45 minute 'making of'), the video (which is in PAL) and audio (2.0) are very pleasant, the DVD looks great upscaled on a larger TV too.The series is treated as one long feature film, disc one has the fantastic opening titles but no credits, disc two doesn't have any titles or credits and disc three has just the end credits. There are chapter marks and the screen does go blank where the original broadcast would have had commercial breaks but a lot of TV shows on DVD have these pauses. The menus themselves are quite crude and not as sophisticated as other DVD's but they serve their purpose.The main problem and it's a big one is there are authoring errors on the discs. Disc one has one about 22 minutes in, the image stops for a few seconds then jumps ahead. Now depending on your player you may be able to play through this without the disc crashing or locking up your player. If you can't I'd recommend pausing the disc at 22 minutes and using your players GOTO function to jump ahead to 00:22:11 this should go passed the error. It is annoying but it's the only fault during the show itself. Disc two is error free as far as I can tell but disc three has another error but not during the show itself so it's possible it's during the 'making of'.Other customers have mentioned the subtitles, unfortunately there are no English subtitles just Dutch ones and they are automatic, they cannot be turned off before the show starts (unless I missed a menu!) but they can be turned off during the show with your remote, just press the SUBTITLE button to remove them. It's quite simple.The show itself is still fantastic with great characters, lots of silly humour and some of the best scenery in TV history. If the show ever makes it to Blu-ray it will be a treat for the eyeballs!If you know anyone who loves Once Upon A Time or Mirror, Mirror and have never seen or heard of The 10th Kingdom then they will love this show (and you) Happily Ever After!

Although the discs are in Dutch, the episodes are in full English soundtrack, you just need to turn off the subtitles, go to ondertiteling and select the ait option, there done.This 2000 fantasy comedy begins when spoilt Prince Wendell is transformed into a dog following a breakout at the Snow White memorial Prison in the fourth kingdom and he leaps through a magical mirror, colliding with Virginia in our world, closely pursued by Trolls and a half wolf. But returning home she soon realises she is in danger and flees with Wendell back through the portal, but will she be any safer there and can she break Wendells curse?This 3 disc set is full of wry humour from the start, being frivolous and poking fun at many well known fairy tales. The special effects are still impressive and the worlds credible. Best acting must go to the Wolf [Scott Cohen] and the dog, no, it really is a dog!Originally filmed as 10 one hour episodes, this plays in three continuous parts, without breaks or credits. All the discs load to a main menu featuring play, scene selection, and subtitles [on/off] . Disc 1 also has special features [making of, cast and crew, characters and search for 10th kingdom] while disc 3 has a making of .This is a 12 rating as much of the humour is risqué and adult by inuendo and some of the ‘catchphrases’ could prove embarrassing if picked up by youngsters, but the swearing is generally light and infrequent. While there is no extreme violence, there are scenes ‘after-the-fact’ which some younger viewers may find distressing and the final part is quite dark and intimidating. Just be careful what you wish for.
