What kind of a SD card would one buy for still shots only?

16 GB SD cards are more than enough for any Shots you're taking ; Just stick to name brands such as SanDisk Ultra 16 GB SDHC Class 10 Flash Memory Card 30MB/s SDSDU-016G-AFFP it's very affordable ..... see it by typing in the the above info .....what I have is the 16 GB SDXC Class 10 which can handle 45 MB/S speeds and I have had no problems with it. The SDHC is the cheaper and slower (usually about 4 MB/S speed). So if you need something reliable to use as a memory card for videos then go SDXC Class 10. It is well worth the money to use in videos but for cameras while taking still pictures only then you will not need this extremely fast card. Also it holds enough pics in the hi def format that you can actually go with a 8 GB card however for long vacations & fewer downloads get the 16GB ( 32 & 64 are way too expensive to invest in one card & not needed ) .

Since Amazon now labels the "Old Model" and B&H Photo has marked it as discontinued, what FujiFilm FinePix replaced this model(HS50EXR)?

As of yet, there isn't one. There were no new models in the HS series line announced this year. It's a shame, really, because I LOVE the manual zoom on this camera line. Currently Fuji is touting the FinePix S1 (which has the "standard" zoom mechanism, via rocker switch) but most of the other specs match the HS50's - albeit it is water/dust resistant. Fuji is also pushing their XT1 "prosumer" line, so I fear that the HS50 may be the end of its series.

Has anyone used a teleconverter lens with this camera for more zoom? results?

Gibbons-san ... -I have not used a teleconverter with this camera-, sorry. With the current zoom of 1000, I have not found the need for more. But on the opposite end of the spectrum, the micro/close-up capability is fantastic. Respectfully, David

Yes it has a built in pop up flash that in the menu you can adjust in 1/3 power levels from -2/3 power to +2/3 powerIE.. -2/3 -1/3 0 +1/3 +2/3 do not compare this flash to a Speedlight with a Guide number of 58But I do use it now and then. When out in a snow storm I turn it on up to full power to get the snowflakes that are coming down in front of the camera to be lit up. and when the subjects are maybe less than eight ft away. just depends. Play with it "I DO love this camera"If given the choice between a life time supply of Oreos and this Camera I think it would be a toss up.. I hope that helps.
