great, easy to use investment
this is a great ball retriever. it fits nicely in my bag and easily extends to 18 feet. it pays for itself many times over with the balls i rescue. i bought one for my wife and she loves it. i especially like the way it grips the ball and holds it. it is modestly fragile. you cannot forcefully jam the retrieving end very hard to collapse it. it can break. but w proper care, it will last well.

Get a grip on the ball or scoop the ball, it works well either way
This is not my first ball retriever, I've tried almost every type on the market. This one works as good or better than any I've used. The fact that I have worn out so many is another story, lets don't go there. This retriever grips the ball by friction or you can scoop the ball out of soft muddy bottoms. So far, it is doing just as it's supposed to do. If you can put the ring on top of the ball with a little bit of pressure, it will grip the ball pretty securely. It doesn't require much pressure to firmly grip the ball and it's small enough to dip a ball from soft stuff. All that's left is to see how the shaft does long-term. I've had problems with shafts from this company a few years ago but they were very responsive, so I'm optimistic that this one will hold up and if there is a problem the company will make it right. After a few months use, here is additional information: I have the 18 foot "reach" which is 14 feet long fully extended. Collapsed, it is 19 7/8 inches, the handle is hefty at 1 1/8 diameter. The device weighs just more than a pound. It can be used in two ways, either scoop a ball or press down on top of the ball which will grip it fairly well if the ball is on firm ground or rock. It is made of 16 sections of steel nested so as to extend to any length up to the maximum. The smallest section is only about 1/4 inch in diameter and I try to avoid extending it unless necessary. The construction allows extension of any section or sections to obtain the desired length. In other words, you can make it, for example, ten feet long without extending the smaller sections. The retriever is sturdy enough but I try to avoid extending the smallest sections unless trying to reach the maximum distance, preferring the strength of larger sections rather than taking a chance of bending the tip sections. Some of the large sections are tight but can be extended and sprayed with lubricant occasionally, making them very usable on the course. So far, it is the best retriever I've had and I have used many over the years. I don't carry my bag any more and wouldn't recommend it for a carry bag, only because of the weight. It fits easily in a bag to use on a cart or push cart.

Traps it first try
I was replacing a clunky old rotating cup retriever, and was unsure whether to go to the spring trap style or the open donut friction style. I chose the latter because in my area we are reaching out into bushy areas as often as into water. I read some reviews that the spring style can easily be tripped by intervening sticks, so I went with the open donut friction style and I love it. It requires very little pressure to get the ball to stick in the open donut and it is also easy to get it out. I got the stainless 18 foot version. I keep the two largest segments extended and stick the retriever in one of the club tubes. I try to use the larger segments first to get it out the length needed and seldom need more than half of its full extension. It is a little flexible when extended all the way, but that is just the result of thin wall tubing required to make a light weight device. I have not found the flexing to be a problem. Recommended.

Poor Materials Used
We purchased this more expensive retriever believing the good reviews. Purchased in March and the head ball grip snapped off. There was NO stress on the head what so ever. The thin metal shaft below the head snapped off with the golf ball in the grip. Poor metal materials. Would NOT recommend.

If you can see the ball, this’ll probably reach it!!
I looked at a bunch of different ball retrievers, read various reviews on them, etc., etc. I selected this one as it seemed to be the best for the money and my needs. I got the 18 ft. reach model (actual length is 14 ft.) which was longer than what I felt I really need. But it collapses down to a mere 20 inches which I really liked - it fits great in my bag’s umbrella pocket which I wasn’t using anyways. Plus it’s nice in the fact that, given the short length of each telescoping section, you can extend the shaft out to pretty much whatever length you desire. The retriever is somewhat substantial weight-wise - came in at 1 lb. 2.5 oz. - but the telescoping shaft sections are stainless which I liked. Fair warning on the first use of it: The shaft sections will leave some black residue on your hands but it easily washes off. I suspect it’s protectant/lubricant to allow the sections to telescope and collapse easily. Once fully expanded, I wiped it down with a dry paper towel to get most of the black off then applied a bit of “dry silicone” spray to another paper towel, wiped it down with that, then expanded it and contracted it several times. I think that’ll work out fine - I’ll just keep an eye on it and reapply the dry silicone to it periodically to keep it working easily. All in all, I’m very pleased with the purchase. It’s a very well made item!

1 link stuck out.
Great retriever. Only problem I've had was with it not going fully compact after 3 uses. I extended the retriever to around 10 feet and when collapsing it back to put in my bag it remained 1 link extended. It's a little aggravating, but i extend it a little more and store it with my clubs now where as it did fit in the side pocket. Its fairly sturdy and does its job.

Should have bought this thing a long time ago!
This is a very good ball retriever. Simply place the ring over top of a ball and it picks it up no problem! Works very well in dry or wet conditions. I’m not sure how long it extends but safe to say you’ll be reaching golf balls that you couldn’t have gotten before. Great product and highly recommended.

Quality Built Retriever
Folds really short with it's telescopic mechanism. Have successfully retrieved several balls. Need to identify how to fit in my bag as it end mechanism is smaller than the individual dividers in my bag. Currently put it in the clothing pocket alongside my waterproof gear so after use it's not wetting anything else. Would certainly recommend to golfers
