Product Description Robert Shaw, Genevieve Bujold and James Earl Jones star in this lusty, rollicking pirate adventure set in the 18th Century Caribbean. After rescuing his friend Nick Debrett (Jones) from execution, swaggering buccaneer Red Ned Lynch (Shaw) comes to the aid of wronged noblewoman Jane Barnet (Bujold). The feisty lady is also good with a sword, and together the three attempt to free the citizens of Jamaica from the evil Lord Durant (Peter Boyle). It's treachery, romance and treasure in this entertaining action-filled high seas epic.Bonus Content: Featurette Production Notes Cast and Filmmakers Trailer .com Practically a nonstop brawl between pirates and anybody who gets in their path, this lighthearted, high-energy 1976 movie set in 18th century Jamaica is short on an actual story but thick with stunts and swordplay. Robert Shaw stars as the bawdy, swaggering pirate Red Nel Lynch, whose lusty crew of thieves comes to the aid of Lynch's right-hand man and close pal (James Earl Jones), then helps a beleaguered noblewoman (Genevieve Bujold) whose father and property have been seized by a local tyrant (Peter Boyle). Plot details are pretty much relegated to filling in the spaces between rollicking scenes of flying fists and gleaming blades, and a sort-of love story between Shaw and Bujold never gets the chance to go anywhere for all the orchestrated scuffling. Boyle's performance as a Basil Rathbone-style villain has got to be the least persuasive role of his career, but there are compensations, particularly Bujold's feisty turn as the heroine and a kooky scene in which Shaw and Jones amuse each other by trading dirty limericks. Directed by James Goldstone (Winning). The DVD release includes production notes, cast and filmmakers' bios, a theatrical trailer, and Web links. --Tom Keogh

Fun and Frivolous
This is a pirate movie made in 1976 hearkening back to the swashbucklers of old and paying tribute to that genre without quite being of it. The emphases here is on getting treasure, getting the girl, getting the bad guy and showing off fencing skills (or the lack of them). Its all done in good fun and is enjoyable to watch if not taken too seriously. The story takes place in the Caribbean waters around Jamaica. The island is run by a corrupt governor who does not hesitate to kill political opponents in order to confiscate their estates. He answers to nobody except the crown and the crown is very far away. In short, he is a "legal" pirate and has a penchant for the perverse. He is ably played by Peter Boyle. The pirate captain is played by Robert Shaw. He is popular with his crew and struts around with a devil may care attitude plundering the governor's interests. He is also quite popular with the common folk of Jamaica and seems to be a sort of seagoing Robin Hood. He is aided by his sidekick/first mate played by a very young James Earl Jones.Genevieve Bujold plays the daughter of a local nobleman imprisoned by the governor. She does not care for the pirate but is willing to swallow her pride in coming to him with a scheme to free her father. Predictably, she and the captain fall for each other.Everything in this film is predictable as clockwork but is quite fun to watch. There are some differences between this product of the 70s and the original movies in the 30s. Bujold shows a lot more skin; Errol Flynn did not engage in dirty limerick contests with his first mate and the pirate ship is anachronistic by several centuries. These bits may serve to actually increase the modern viewer's interest factor.

Great actors having a lark
Something for everyone here...For starters, it has a film score by John Addison that is by turns juanty, quirky, creepy, heroic and sweepingly romantic. The cast includes the velvety voices of James Earl Jones, Robert Shaw, Genevieve Bujold, and Geoffery Holder (actor/dancer/costume designer/composer famous for his 7-up commericals and numerous voice-overs, including Burton's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.") Anjelica Houston, aptly named "The Woman of Dark Visage", never speaks a word. There is sword play all over the place, much of it done with wide shots - as opposed to today's barrage of tight shots which leaves you feeling like the actors didn't have time to really learn the choreography and the director decided to fake it by cutting in close and often. The characters are acted in heroic proportion: Shaw is the brash, leering outlaw who finds himself uncomfortably in love with a steely girl who is part aristocrat and part spitfire. Boyle's greedy Lord Durant is suitably sleazy and it's hard to decide which is more disgusting - watching him fondle a young boy or the spectacle of Durant getting in his hairy back waxed clean. The film boasts an impressive cast of great actors from another era, all of whom look like they're having more fun than a kid on the first day of summer vacation. Those of a strongly feminist bent may experience discomfort at the brothel scene, or the swordfight in which Bujold's character loses both her dignity and her modesty at the point of Ned's rapier. (Much like Catherine Zeta-Jones in Zorro.) There are other moments in the film that might overstep both taste and political correctness, depending on your world view. For me, it's such a lark that I don't particularly care. I've always loved this movie for what it is - a romping, stomping, rollicking tall tale of clever brigands and the lovers/villians who cross their path.

Perfect chemistry
There are a number of films that have what I call perfect chemistry that deserve to be 5 star films, this is one such film. I saw this film when it opened owned it on laser disc then dvd now just hoping for Blu-ray and digital. The story and acting of this film won’t win oscars but there appeal the hooks if you will grab you and take you on a very enjoyable ride. The hero Red Ned Lynch as played by The Late great Robert Shaw is an honorable rogue the heroine played by Genevieve Bujold plays a disgraced noblewoman seeking her fathers freedom and clearing the family name. While Peter Boyle’s ably plays the villainous Lord Durant. Costarring James Earl Jones and Beau Bridges among others like a fine wine they only get better in time. And check out some of my other Perfect Chemistry films and see if you agree.Near DarkLet it RideThe Cutting EdgeAmerica FlyersStardust.

Light-hearted Salute to Pirate Movies of Old
I love this movie. No, it's not got a great plot, and a fair amount of the acting is hammy, but I honestly believe it was meant to be hammy. It's a 1970s salute to the old Errol Flynn and Tyrone Power pirate movies, without taking itself seriously. From the tacky limericks to the awful puns, everyone except the villain had at least one funny line, even when unintended. Some of those lines have long been a part of my friends' and families' vocabularies. My favorite performances were those by James Earl Jones, Geoffrey Holder, Beau Bridges and Peter Boyle (and the monkey). Everyone else did well, for a "B" movie, and all seemed to be having fun.The music was perfectly suited to the movie, and I remembered the music long after the movie ended. The soundtrack is available, by the way, and worth the purchase/download.Anytime you feel like pure escapist fare, with sun, sand, water, sword fighting, acrobatics, fabulous costumes and humor, this is a movie to reach for. It's a keeper for me -- will always be in my movie library.
