A must read guide for success in any workplace
This is one of the most important books on leadership I have read and like many of you reading this I have read a lot. I found myself saying repeatedly "you know all this"..."you've experienced that"..."you've made that mistake too"..."if only I'd worked this out at that time and responded in that way.."This morning just as I write this review I see a piece published by Gail McGovern, CEO of the US Red Cross, "What Corporate America can learn from non-profits" again full of the "usual leadership b.s. stuff." I almost forgot that this is the same organisation who employed aggressive legal tactics in responding to freedom of information requests as to how it spends the publics' donations. It is a competitive world we live in - that's just basic human nature and it will always be so. That is why this book is essential reading for todays aspiring leadership candidates and hopefully for older dogs like myself it is not too late to learn! I only wish I had it twenty years ago starting my career.

He has a good range of both anecdotal and referenced evidence
Jeffrey Pfeffer is an author of some repute. He writes from a position of some considerable disenchantment with the Leadership industry, and explains this well. He has a good range of both anecdotal and referenced evidence. His conclusions are sound: there is no measurable evidence about the "industry's" usefulness in improving organisational or employee results.

Excellent red: witty, wise and iconoclastic
I enjoyed this book a great deal. It actively eschews much of the reading I have done on leadership and it does so with a great deal of wit and good evidence. This book will make leaders think and pause about their ideas and their actions which is no doubt a good thing.

No barriers to entry
One book that should have been re-written before publishing it. Few ideas beyond the kitchen-logic; below expectations.

Grumpy old man rant!
I expected a book full of how we can develop better leaders only to be confronted with a boring book full of a single repeating message (managers and leaders should use evidence to make decisions) and finding endless examples of failed managers/leaders or successful leaders with faults (really, Nelson Mandella was not a saint, what a shocker!). The premise of this book was set out in the preface and I wished I had stopped there because no other insights or suggestions transpired. This is an exercise in using a good name to sell rubbish (Superman V Batman like). Please save your money and your time, if after 100 of years of leaders all practicing poor leadership (and politics, really!!) we are not going to change it with one populous book.Very, very poor

Fascinating insight. Could not put this one down. I will certainly seek out more of the same..
Fan book. I will be looking for more from Mr Pfeffer. I will certainly take on board the key themes of this book and apply to my corporate life.
