Tatting Patterns and Designs (Dover Crafts: Lace)

Yes, it is in black and white and looks photocopied, but the patterns are really good. This book may not be for the beginner or to teach you to tat. I would suggest youtube videos that are remarkable. I had to pay for VHS tapes when I started. I had to see tatting done to fully understand it. I learned to Tat more than 15 years ago and this was one of my first books for patterns. I love the cross patterns. I misplaced my original copy and reordered it while it is still available.

This book looks like they just made black and white copies of the previous book. They didn’t even bother to make it a good quality copy.The only reason I wanted this particular book was my grandmother made the cross patterns from this book.

Most of the photos of the finished pieces are very dark making the stitch work difficult to see. There are also no close-up views of any detail work.

Recommended by a Instructor, she said it was one of the best & clearest book available along with the second book I ordered.Learn to Tat ( book & DVD)..I've only given them a four because I haven't had time to do any direct work from either book..but they look good.

Go glad to find Tatting books on Amazon! Don't want this to become a lost craft due to lack of material. My great aunt tatted and I'm so happy to continue the art.

It would have been so much better if all of the pictures in the book were in color. Some of the pictures are very dark

Good clear patterns

This book may not be right for the complete beginner to tatting, but is great for those who already know something of tatting and have mastered basic techniques.The book opens with a short introduction to the history of tatting. This is quite interesting to read, and includes a few really nice pictures, such as a couple of very intricate tatted handkerchief edgings.A section on tatting techniques follows, but of course, it is better to just look up videos online.Next, there are patterns for edgings and insertions. These range greatly in complexity.Following this are patterns for 'Stars', or small, pretty motifs. I've tatted a few of these, and they turn out great. They also work up quickly, being so small, though some are a little tricky to make.Then there is a section of 'Simple Patterns', and this includes instructions for making bookmarks, candlestick-frills (does anyone use these now? They still look elegant, though!), collars, doilies etc. These, again, are of varying degrees of complexity.The next section is devoted to 'Advanced Patterns'. These are all doilies, that are rather intricate and delicate and very pretty.A couple of patterns for crowns come next, and finally, there is one page of instructions on how to wash and care for tatted lace.The patterns are all written, and not diagrammed, but this should not be a problem. If you are getting serious about tatting, go ahead and buy this book!
