The Granth is the central text of Sikhism, a religion that emerged in the Punjab region of India in the 15th Century. Sikhism is a unique faith which has aspects of Islam: monotheism and iconoclasm, and Hinduism: reincarnation, karma and nirvana. However Sikhism is distinct from Hinduism and Islam. The Sikh Gurus (teachers), contemporaries of Luther and Calvin, were reformers who rejected the caste system and much of the apparatus of Hindu ritual and legalism. They promoted religious tolerance and the equality of women. The founding Guru, Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, (1469-1538), is noted for the saying "There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim." The Granth, compiled by Guru Gobind Singh, contains compositions of six Gurus, namely Guru Nanak, Guru Angad, Guru Amar Das, Guru Ram Das, Guru Arjan, and Guru Teg Bahadur. The hymns are arranged by the thirty one ragas (musical forms) in which they were composed. The hymns that comprise the Granth were originally written in several different languages: Persian, mediaeval Prakrit, Hindi, Marathi, old Panjabi, Multani, and several local dialects. In addition, there are Sanskrit and Arabic portions. This makes it extrordinarily difficult to translate. The translation presented here is the Khalsa Consensus Translation, which is highly regarded by scholars. The Granth is considered the living embodiment of the Gurus, the "eleventh guru". Printed copies of the Granth are treated with the greatest respect. This is the reason for the honorific titles that make up the full name of the book. There are protocols to be observed in while reading of the Granth. A Sikh reader suggests the following: "Out of respect, it is advised that before you do read the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, that you cover your hair." This is normally with a turban or a piece of cloth provided by the gurdwara. (Quote from sacred- Review: Very good product - Very good product! Shri Gru Granth Sahib is a book written in repetitive and melidic rhythm to open our soul for the God and His Grace. It's aim is insight, not the logic or intellect. Nor there is srory. I am not a Sikh but I had been reading it every morning a few pages as an aid and inspiration for my meditation practice.

excellent translation
Excellent translation. would be better if it had footnotes or explanations on certain topics. definitely not for "beginners" Having a knowledge of Vedic literature a plus so you know what sastras, upanisads, etc. are referred to. Also who Shiva, Brahma, the Gopis, and others are. Highly recommended.

They translation seems to be very good, however I am a novice. I would like to have the original text in the original language alongside or above/below the English.

Extraction of Dr Khalsa's translation
This appears to be most (if not all) of the English text extracted from Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa's translation. It's not necessarily by an "Unknown Author".

Eine klassische Übersetzung
Eine elegante klassische Übersetzung. Ich hatte in einer Vorlesung über Heilige Bücher anderer Religionen über dieses Buch gehört und wollte mich doch einmal näher damit beschäftigen. Leider bin ich (noch) nicht in der Lage, die in diesem Buch zusammengefaßten Texte im Original zu lesen, weshalb ich zu dieser klassischen Übersetzung Zuflucht nehme.

Mere Translation
Even though I have given this book 5 stars, I feel this book should not be rated in such a manner. This book is in a series of books which gives English Translations of the Shri Guru Granth Sahib, and these Sikh holy writings should not be subjectted to such forms of appraisals. Its like asking for a star based rating for the Bible, Koran, etc. This book gives a direct line by line translation, but does not elaborate any further. I feel this book would have been better if it also provided the writings in Gurmukhi script (as are the writings in the Shri Guru Grath Sahib) and then deciphered into English. There is so much to be learned from each single line of writing in the Shri Guru Granth Sahib that mere direct translations does not do it justice. The crux of the message to be learned is in the deeper analysis of the original writings, which this book does not provide. The translations offered in this book are the same as can be seen on some popular Sikh websites, such as [...] These however do provide the writings in Gurmukhi aswell. For those who do wish to learn the deeper meanings of the Sikh holy writings, I would whole heartedly recommend the following 2 books written by Maneshwar S Chahal - Japji Sahib & Asa Di War.
