Review: Nice book of ideas - I have made eight of the projects so far. But the only way I can count 12 projects is to count โpaintingโ as one project. The book also comes with an additional pattern that can be downloaded from the publisher. The first bear project was very clear with nice photos and descriptions. The author did use some tools that I donโt have yet (gouges and large V-tool), but I could do all the basic cuts with the knives that I do have. Two projects are just variations on the basic bear (Christmas and patriotic โUnited States 4th of Julyโ theme). My favorite ones are the โcub in a stumpโ and the โwell dressed mooseโ Review: Easy carvings perfect for beginners - Easy carvings perfect for beginners, nice templates. Have completed Barry, Ma, and Pa bear, and the well dressed moose. All are fun to carve and look great after I dip them in the Linseed oil ( which I have used for all my carving for quite awhile. Tip if you are preparing the Linseed oil finish, dissolve the Raw Umber oil paint in mineral spirits first so it will mix well.

Such a great book!
What an incredible book this is!! I did the follow along project, Barry the bear, as a gift for my sis, and she LOVES it! Such great projects. And, via THIS author, i FINALLY know both how to PROPERLY paint my whittlings in what's called a "wash" technique, and, something else to finish them with (boiled linseed oil), that i like much better than the polyurethane i'd been using since i started doing pocketknife whittling in 1994. ๐

Great Carving Book
I have a lot of carving books from different authors but all the ones I have by Mike Shipley is above all others. The best ones are โWhittling the Old Sea Captainโ, โWhittling Country Bearโ & โWhittling Country Folkโ. All are written very well with good detailed instructions & good patterns. I would definitely recommend his books.

Good reference book with patterns of bears
Good reference book with patterns of bears. Shipley did a good job on this book with plenty of patterns and instructions. Carvings have been very enjoyable to do. I want to do them all!

A good book. I review books for carvers based on ...
A good book. I review books for carvers based on quality of photographs/drawings, clarity of text, number of actual useful project drawings and quality of exposition of the projects that are fully detailed. Most books of this sort do one project from beginning to end and then give you medium to poor quality drawings for the rest of the projects that are claimed to be included. No so with this and the other Shipley books, several complete projects and all the drawings are well executed. A good and useful book.
