Grow!T Expanded Clay Pebbles, 4-16 mm, Brown, 40 L, Hydroponic Media | Reusable 100 percent natural clay media improves drainage and aeration in hydroponics, aquaponics, and container gardens

I've used these and ones like it for a little while now. I've got a hydroponic flood and drain system that's about 5 months old or so. They work as a fantastic base for most plants. They only seem to struggle with large heavier plants like tomatoes. Pictured is some parsley, lettuce, and the shoots you see between the lettuce is ginger we tossed in just to see how it would do.

I used this to act as a drainage medium for a reptile vivarium. A lot of people complained about the pieces not being perfect balls. For me, this didn't matter, especially since when I think of "pebbles," I tend to think of imperfect little pieces. The clay pebbles do vary in size, with a marginal amount being tiny enough to slip through a strainer. However, it is quite a large bag and I had plenty leftover. For my purpose, it works quite well. It helps to keep the humidity in the tank without leaving any standing water. I have yet to see any sort of mold or fungus growth. I am quite pleased! Hint for cleaning: I divided the bag into manageable amounts and used an old strainer to rinse them off with the hose until the water runs clear. This a longer process but helps to thoroughly rid yourself of all the dust. I originally tried just throwing everything into a large bin, filling with water, and pouring out the water but I still ended up with dusty water. Do yourself a favor and clean thoroughly the first time around.

I bought these for my flood and drain set-up. You have to clean these very well as they have a lot of powder from production. As I was cleaning I was worried because they all floated. I made sure all of the water was out of my barrels and filled to the top with rock. I then flooded them and I was very happy because the weight of the pebbles where enough to keep from floating up and over the sides. There is also maybe an inch of dry rock at the top of my system to prevent the growth of alge. They are perfect for my halfbarrel flood and drain. Also if your interested took just about 6 to fill 2 half barrels. Its a lot of money but after digging out my $150 of rock that tested fine with vineger but then the ph started creeping up was not fun either. This pebble is so light and easy on the hands to work with and should withstand for so long I'm happy with the investment.

I went through a 40lt bag last year. The product works as intended. It is dirty and needs several rounds of cleaning. I also noticed a higher ph I had to float it in a bucket with a bubbler for 3 days stirring and adding ph down until the solution around it stabilized to around ph 6.0-65 and held for over 12 hours. Slightly inconvenient but it works and is decently priced. I am purchasing it again.

If you are looking for perfectly round pebbles, like on the photo on the bag, look elsewhere. I read the reviews, so I was aware of what I was getting. Most of the pebbles were irregular shaped and looked like odd lava rock, but that does not affect my hydroponics system. I use a combination of hydroton in the bottom of each tier of the system and then in the grow baskets surrounding my roots. I used to grow directly in the tiers, in perlite, but I have always enjoyed hydroton, and this way I also have more control over the root system so that it does not clog my system. I just ordered a 40 ltr bag because 10 ltrs was only enough to make a short foundation in each of the tiers of one system. Since I completely switched over from Perlite this year, I need a lot. I soaked first (see picture of pebbles in the pink tub) and then I drained and strained. Towards the bottom, I strained and rinsed again in the strainer. A lot of mud and residue comes off of these, so be sure to soak and rinse before adding it to your systems. Obviously, I will check pH once I get everything set up for the plants, as I know that having this much hydroton will likely change the water balance, but that is okay. I also used this same brand in an aquaponics system, and I grew strawberries, mint and chamomile successfully. The hydroton did not bother the fish.

Starting my semi-hydro plant journey and bought these. They're not like the perfect orange-y colored balls that you see some people using. These are a regular brown color and are more irregularly shaped, but that's fine for me because I had read it's actually easier to situate your plant in the irregular-shaped leca instead of the perfect balls. For the most part these haven't sunk after soaking them in water (even after soaking for weeks), but I don't think that really matters as far as actually using these for planting because none of the plants I've moved to leca have died and it's been a couple months now.

I built an aquaponics system for my daughter and filled the grow bed with two bags of this media. The media was extremely dirty and ended up clogging my laundry sink. I’ve never had anything clog my laundry sink before but the excess clay dust from this media did it. Despite soaking the pieces for a week, they still float. Most of the pieces are broken and there are a lot of really small pieces, the size of gravel that can wash down into the fish tank and cause issues with your pump. After figuring out that they don’t stay in place and float, I ended up getting pond rock from Lowes and using that to fill up half of the grow bed. I then used 1 bag of this media to complete the grow bed. This was a lot cheaper and worked a lot better. If I had to guess, I believe this is seconds or perhaps defects that are sold as firsts and for the price, that makes sense. I found much better media from another vendor. The biggest difference is the legit clay sounds like rice crispy cereal when they get wet from all the pores soaking up water. These definitely do not do this. They are more like lava rock or something weird.

I've been using the Grow!T GMC10L Horticultural Clay Pebbles in my hydroponic system. It has several benefits but also a few minor issues. Pros: The 4mm-16mm size range is ideal for most hydroponic setups. The clay pebbles provide excellent aeration and drainage. The 10L volume offers good value for the price. They are reusable after cleaning, making them environmentally friendly. Cons: The pebbles can be dusty upon arrival and require rinsing. They may float initially in the hydroponic system until fully waterlogged. The bag can contain some smaller fragments and dust. They can be heavy, which might affect some lightweight systems. My conclusion: The Grow!T GMC10L Horticultural Clay Pebbles are a solid choice for hydroponic gardening. Despite minor inconveniences, they provide good aeration and drainage, and are reusable. If you're a hydroponic gardener, these pebbles are worth considering.
