Sweetest closed-back 2x12 for EL34 amp
Super surprised that they sell this on Amazon. I recently bought a black Orange Rockerverb MkIII 50 head.( Orange Rockerverb 50 MKIII - 50W 2-Channel Tube Head Black )To be a completest, I ordered this matching closed-back 2x12. It came boxed in the original Orange packaging and was very well protected.I've gone from a "Like It" to a "Love it" towards this cabinet over time. I've always played through open- or semi-open- back cabinets (think Strats and clean Mesas and Fenders). Open-back has an airy sound with a natural reverb whereas this has a focused punch, so naturally it took a while to grow on me (as did my humbuckered Gibson SG). After a nice breaking period (amp cranked to max and SG's tone rolled down), it sounds amazing.I compared Mesa, Orange, Marshall, some boutique, and DIY 2x12 and 4x12 closed-backs. I settled on orange after deciding on the tonal difference of the loaded speakers. They are a PERFECT match for an EL34 amp, especially one with a 'fuzzy' lead channel. When comparing this to my personal fave, Mesa, I preferred the construction of the Orange. This thing is a tank. The Chinese speaker variable was a bit off-putting when comparing it to a couple of others (like the Mesa), but the tone was "there" with this cabinet when playing through a Rockerverb. One serious desire to dock this is a star is the lack of possible loads in the back. There are only 2 jacks (one input, one for daisy-chaining), and it's set to 16Ω. I didn't remove the back to check speaker impedance or series/parallel wiring, but I might modify it with an extra jack & switch for 8Ω, as that's pretty much the universal middle-ground for all amps.
