Does it matter what way it goes in ?

Yes, it matters which way it goes in the part with the spring goes towards the block or cylinder head. That is what makes it work the heat warms the brass part surrounded by the spring warms up and pulls the other part open to allow coolant to flow. If you put it in wrong it will destroy the engine because it will never open and the engine will get too hot.
