I think the manufacturers assume people already know how to add these things. I was completely confused when I got the cartridges and couldn't figure out how to get them into my pen. I looked online in several places to try to find a video for these particular cartridges and came up with nothing. After about 10 minutes and taking my pens completely apart, I noticed the little "puncture" area on one side. I pressed the cartridge back in the same spot I'd been placing it in, pressed down a little harder, and the pen filled up with ink. Although there are no instructions, once you learn how to set up the fountain pens, this product comes in pretty handy.But be VERY prepared to hold your fountain pen carefully because if you drop one on a hardwood floor, some of that ink will splash.

A great value...5 pens and 40 refills, BUT it takes a little work to get the ink flowing; however the pen does write smoothly after that.........Overall a 4 1/2 rating........and thanks.. I have not tried the bottled ink converter; I like cartridges because not as messy..

Some ink cartridges require a little working with to make them flow properly, and therefore are Absent Without Leave. I like to have ink cartridges that are like the old Timex commercials -- they take a licking, but keep on ticking! They should be "maintenance free."

I had to stick a small sharp point into the cartridge for the pen to work and it splattered a little bit on me
