Great backup drive, small n quiet, does the job, now have 2 the same

Fast transfer time

For real world use I found this gave me transfer speeds of around 25Mb/s The usb C cable and adapter are super cheap and bulky connectors, add a decent quality cable onto your order. However these are only free extras so I haven't deducted any stars

I bought this item in order to do scheduled backups. The software that comes with the disk is therefore as important as the disk itself. As far as I can tell the WD disk works OK but the accompanying Acronis software does not. Acronis as one might expect, for security reasons, alters the disk access control. It does so to a level that a user with administrator privileges is often locked out. This may or may not be acceptable but it also manages to lock itself out so that backups fail because Acronis can't access the disk. They supply an unlock app that lets you regain access, but at some random time Acronis locks itself out again. Your backup fails with messages such as "Insufficient Disk Space" when there are hundreds of gigabytes available. And all this happens without any notification outside of the Acronis product. So unless you spend your time monitoring it you are blissfully unaware that your backup has failed. Before buying this product, you should use Chatgpt or a similar product and ask about Acronis disk access problems. I didn't as I relied upon Western Digital having a good software partner. I was wrong. The two stars are for the WD hardware and zero for Acronis.

Purchased this to use with the advertised backup and security features. The drive, however, only comes with very basic WD Discovery software requiring you to install & use it to download the separate WD backup & security apps. Unfortunately, as has happened to other reviewers, despite uninstalls & reinstalls, the software would not connect online instead displaying an error message saying to try again later. Could not contact WD, phone number for their UK store on the webpage is unobtainable. Eventually found in support pages a link for WD Discovery Full Version, which includes all the apps. Problem solved, but would make sense if WD bundled this with the outgoing hard drives. Then, after wondering why the first backup I created took up so much space, discovered that the backup software maintains a second copy of the backup for data recovery purposes . So for example, backing up 500gbs of data would need a 2 Tb hard drive (i.e twice the size of the data plus a bit to play with). This should be mentioned in the Amazon product listing so that the correct drive can be purchased. Data transfer speed not that great either. Not impressed.

Storage capacity is fine but the software that is supposed to make backing up easy cannot be installed on my computer. It stops at 18% and cannot be closed, I have to use Task Manager to close it. (Running Windows 7 32-bit.) Tech Support was keen to help but first they referred me to a number of irrelevant articles, as a last troubleshooting step they suggested I delete all data in the Roaming folder, which sounds a bit strange and risky, and ultimately they were not able to help. I can still use the hard drive for storage in the old copying+pasting way but it does feel like a waste of money. This is supposed to be a brand-new product. Very disappointed.
