There are 4 holes. The holes are 3.5" wide, by 2.75" tall.

Do I need to buy a separate mounting kit if I plan on mounting the goal/backboard on a wall?

Yes, you will also need to purchase one of our mounting kits if you would like to mount this backboard and rim to a wall. The Universal kit, model 9594, would work well with mounting to a wall.
