Can these be used individually? Only left or only right side?

The right earbud is primary and connects to your phone. It is the only one used for phone calls. The left earbud connects to the right earbud to receive its signal for music. So the answer is "sort of." You can use the right earbud for calls and music while the left remains in the case. You can use the left earbud only if the right is out of the case and connected to the phone and within range of the left earbud (a few feet.) If the signal between right and left is blocked then you'll begin to lose sound. You cannot use the left earbud with the right earbud in the case. It will complain that you need to turn on the right earbud.
