Started on second pull and works well at this time.
To begin with I don't like Briggs and Stratton engines. I purchased this one because it was less than half the price of a Honda and it only needed to work in a extremely hostile location 5 times. When filled with oil and gas it started on the second pull. I noticed a rattling noise I was unfamiliar with inside the engine but have high hopes it is normal for Briggs overhead valve roller bearing engine. I worked with it today for the first time and as normal for a Briggs it had to be choked before it would start if it sat for more than 10 minutes (I used 3 Briggs engines today 1 on a Generac Generator, 1 on a concrete troweling machine and this one).Today this engine performed flawlessly. One of five times I need this engine to operate is complete and I will update this review if I have problems in the following 4 times I use this Briggs engine.November 19, 2014, second time use. Ambient temperature in the middle thirties and it took a dozen or more pulls on the starter rope before the engine started. Once started it took about 45 seconds to a minute before the engine would run without being choked any at all.November 22, 2014, third use. Ambient temperature 60 degrees plus. Engine starts on first pull and works well.

The picture showed a 5 1/2 Hp motor and I was sent a 3 1/2 hp motor
The motor operates properly, I needed a more powerful motor, that is why I ordered (or thought I ordered) a 5 1/2 hp motor

Replacement Engine for tiller
Engine was replacement for a Merry Tiller. I had contacted Briggs customer service with old engine model and serial number. Briggs rep recommended this engine. It fit perfectly. The engine started on second pull and is surprising quiet. Key features: Engine has on off rocker switch. Fuel shut off, choke and throttle. Easy access for air filter maintenance.

these are 3.5 hp not 5.5 hp
Bought this to replace a tiller motor that had given up after 25 years of use. Wouid have given 5 stars except it was solded as a 5.5 hp motor and it arived a 3.5 hp motor.Had slight modification to the belt shield ( drilled new hole in shield Old hole was to far forward ). Other than that all bolted right on fired up and ran it throught the garden with no problems. Seems to have enough power to do the job.Garden is 10ft X 40Ft.

Ode to a Engine
I was replacing a much much older model that was made before the time of man* so I did not know what to expect. How do you compare a raindrop to a flower? Neither even knows the other exists until that one moment when they kiss and then that moment is gone. They separate never to meet again and the pain is only subsided by the beauty of the moment. Life can be summed up about as easy. It started so simply and did the job intended. It was quiet and smooth and shall be remembered in my dreams...or when I am sloshing concrete around. Maybe then too.*Time of this man...so basically pre- '70s model motor

Perfect
Replacement for my log splitter, replacing a 40 year old Briggs. Mounted perfectly and started on the first pull. Wish I'd had done this 10 years ago.

Fit perfectly, sips gas.
I ordered this engine to replace the old one on a rototiller from the 1980's. The bolt holes lined up perfectly and the pully slid right on. I am amazed at how little fuel it uses! Very efficient.
