No it is not insulated. I have an older one that has a softer surface which got a few snags and small rips in the edges over the years. I still put a tablecloth on either when using.

I've used it for a low country boil - but I put a ton of paper down and didn't dump a lot of liquid, just shrimp/crab/corn/taters/sausage. Like any HDPE plastic, you could melt it if it's hot enough. Be sure to put a drain bucket to catch any liquid though. The salt from a seafood boil wouldn't be good for your lawn or whatever you have underneath. All that said, I Googled the melting point of HDPE, and got: "HDPE is unsuitable for high heat applications, as it can only withstand continuous temperatures of up to 180 °F (82.2 °C)." What you dump from your boil will be at 212 degrees, but cool pretty quickly, so I guess it would be a "use at your own risk" sort of thing. I also have to say I've been at plenty of boils (including my own) where people were using the regular flat HDPE topped tables, and none ever melted that I know of. Don't set the boiling kettle on it for sure, but that would ruin a wooden table too. I hope this long answer helps at least a little!!
