IT Systems Management 2nd Edition

I am an IT professional who likes to have a book to read and refer to. This is much more of a classroom book for college that for someone in the workplace. However, if you are a new IT manager and are looking for a reference to compare what you are doing to this would work well. It might even give you ideas for things you aren't doing.

If I had to guess, I would say the author either stopped working in the IT field or wrote the book in the mid to late 90s. Most of his "real world" examples revolve around legacy systems. It's not that we don't still have a few IBM mid-range systems within our infrastructure, but a lot has changed in IT infrastructure since 2000. High availability & business continuity have taken on a whole new meaning thanks to server virtualization, storage deduplication, increased connection speeds between data centers, and cloud computing concepts. While I think many of the concepts are still valid, I would not rely on this as your playbook to IT systems management. While I agree that you must implement some structure and discipline, with all the today's threats on IT I feel your infrastructure must be more responsive and adaptive to change.I would not recommend this book unless you are an IBM iSeries administrator born before 1965.

This is a great how-to guide for running a small or large IT organization. We have 80+ staff in IT and this book has helped us implement systems and policies to run more effectively. There are examples on how to create every committee, form and process very clearly laid out. I would have liked a little more anecdotal evidence for some of the sample organizations this was applied to. My only very minor complaint is the repetitive structure of the assessments. The way to assess the success of anything is to create a matrix, weight the values and assign 1-5 scores.

Despite having been published nearly a decade ago, the core ideas have stayed relevant.

The book presents the interesting topics for IT systems management, but it does not really give in-depth knowledge for IT specialists. Also, many details in the book are just about old and obsolete technologies. Good to read for general information and curiosity of IT fundamental, not for real work. Hope its next editon will be much better.
