Q: Can this hood really remove the sun? In the sample photos, the "With the hood" image is missing the sun flares (expected) and the sun (unexpected).

Those two photos are not valid. Lens hoods will prevent sun flares when the sun is to your side or above you when you're looking straight ahead. Without the hood, the front element of your camera's lens can pick up sun flare when the sun is to your side or above you. With the hood in place, it will prevent the direct light from the sun from touching your front lens element when the sun is too your side or above you. If you turn towards the sun, the lens hood can do nothing to block the sunlight from hitting the front lens element. Lens hoods can do nothing about blocking out the sun when you're looking directly into the sun, so that second image appears to be doctored.

I have it on my coolpix p900, works very well. It is also attached to a polarizing filter lense on the camera. Have had no problems of any kind

No vignetting when push in, when push out, yes there is vignetting but it depends on the distance if 100 mm above no vignetting but 75 mm below there is vignetting. Hope this help.

Q: Does the lens cap fit with this hood?

Yes, once you've screwed the hood on, the lens cap will still fit.
