Some Stanley divisions are better than others
I ordered a Stanley 151 ( flat base) and a 152 (round base) at the same time. The Stanley 152 was made in Canada. It did need some fine tuning, but overall, the quality of the casting and the machining and the sharpness of the blade was very good. The flat bottom 151 tool was made in China. This tool was so poorly cast and machined that it was unusable as shipped. The factory in Canada seems to know their stuff, the factory in China seems to be only concerned with cost and not quality. If you have a choice, I would avoid Stanley tools made in China despite their low cost. Go for the higher quality higher cost tools made in North America or England.

I have reviewed a stapler which jammed easily and could not be taken apart to unjam
This is the 2nd Stanley spokeshave I have purchased -- the first being over 35 years ago -- a flat bottom spokeshave which I have only recently learned how to use properly. That spoke shave needed only sharpening and honing and adjustment by means of the screws on the tool. The quality of Stanley tools has certainly deteriorated in these last 35 years. Elsewhere, I have reviewed a stapler which jammed easily and could not be taken apart to unjam. The red piece that sits on the blade of this tool is a rough casting, with a nobbled surface. On the top this makes no difference, but it is the same surface on the back of the piece which sits against the blade. It doesn't seal tightly to the blade (as does my 35 year old spoke shave) -- and it catches shavings when using the tool. It took me about a half an hour of sanding to get it so it seats flush against the blade and doesn't trap shavings. The blade also needed to be sharpened and honed -- but that is standard practice for any tool, no matter how well it is made. This can be made to work as it should, but it takes more effort than it should.

Stanley spokeshave
It’s a Stanley spokeshave ... it is what it is. I’ve got some work ahead of me to make it comparable to a Stanley made even 50 years ago. It arrived ahead of schedule and was painless to buy. That’s worth four stars, to me.

Good spokeshave
A good tool. The casting needed to be cleaned up but I knew that I would not hesitate to buy an other one.
