Difficulty rating 3.5 out of 5
This was actually pretty easy to install which was surprising. It started leaking after 6 months and I'm not looking forward to ripping the washing machine apart again to access it. I think it's more of a washing machine issue than the part itself.

Restored home washing machine functionality. WOOT!!
Got a call that the home washing machine "died" – it would not enter a rinse cycle and instead left the front loader with water in the tub, which of course was discovered while doing laundry.I hustled home, did some poking around the Internet, searched and found the button combination to put the washer into a diagnostic/test mode, as well as what was represented in each of the steps, according to our particular model (WM4270HWA) and what is the expected result at those steps.sure enough, the 2nd step tests the unit's rinse function, and all we got was the steady noise of something not functioning, and corresponding display of "0" vs changing numbers based on the process.hit a couple of repair/parts sites to make sure of appropriate P/Ns, returned to Amazon, not so much for pricing (although that is a factor, albeit one that seems to be decreasing as Amazon evermore morphs into a flea market) but because i needed the part ASAP.as expected, there are multiple options avail, so it's look at images, read reviews, try to identify legitimates...with an eye on OEM and warranty vs "compatible with."all of those factors combined with the clock and the item in this review is where i landed.without hammering out a step-by-step recounting of how to replace this pump, i will note there seems to be some confusion among people looking to self-repair their washer.to that end —although really should be SOP for anything in life, amirite?!?— a person ought double/triple check to make CERTAIN they know what they're looking for, at, and what is the course of action to utilize an item.the pump assy in a washer, many/most it appears based on my web-scour, involves two (2) pumps, joined centrally but individually, on either side of a manifold/filter housing. The larger pump serves for draining the washer (that's what exhausts out the gray, corrugated hose external to the washer); the other, similar but slightly smaller pump, controls recirculation (sprays water onto laundry, rinses in the tub, etc). THESE PUMPS ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE, but it would seem some reviewers believe they are. (see photo). They are not the same size, overall, nor are the operational specs the same (per labeling). While i'm curious, it's not enough to flip and reinstall them to see what would happen should the pumps be reversed.See the attached photo to show the failed, original pump on the left, and the reviewed pump, on the right. The pumps are virtually identical, incl operational specs noted in the last line of each pump's data tag.FWIW, "Askoll" appears to be a widely used pump manufacturer.Interestingly, the original drain pump does not show the maker, but the recirculation pump is marked "Askoll." (see photo)End result? Despite my never having disassembled or repaired a washer, i was able to methodically do just that.Did it take much of the day? It did.Was a large portion of this time chewed up by familiarizing myself with the processes involved, as well as taking photos and ensuring systematic layout of removed hardware? It was.Did i get aggravated because i didn't have the appropriate tool to remove/return each of the spring rings that keep the large, rubber, door boot seal/gasket in place and alignment with the drum and front panel? yes, yes i did.after a few scrapes, a bit of bloodletting and a few other relative annoyances (funny how much less those are AFTER a project is successfully completed!), the washer's drain pump was replaced, the unit reassembled, and the diagnostic feature activated to reveal a washer now behaving as intended. That passed with flying colors, i ran a "tub clean" to both test for operation and leakage, and also to clear out the nasty, smelly gunk that accumulates in tubing and chambers. No problems there.Let my wife know in the AM of results, and as i type this out, she's on a 5th laundry load.Love it when a plan comes together! How long will this pump last? Remains to be seen.At this price, however, i bought two, because research suggested a drain pump is often a weak point in a washer, and an item that will likely fail. And i've ordered that spring clip removal tool. If you're looking at this pump, you're obviously aiming to repair your own washer, and i'd STRONGLY recommend getting the tool at the same time.Without an extra set of hands to help hold that clip in place, returning the clip into the boot seal's groove ended up a comical display of futility, which was much funnier after the fact.
