exercises to improve visual thinking
I like this book and think it can be used as a good tool for learning.I bought this book as part of a more general project to improve my spatial awareness. The only puzzle-page example in the Amazon sample showed I might explore relations among different shapes by filling-in isolated regions to emphasize individual shapes or pairs of shapes. E.g., complete the four pentagons in the top row then complete the octagon in the third row — omitting all edges with no endpoint in a target shape. Furthermore, after I received the book, I found examples where structure of a repeat-unit for a tessellation could be intuited from dot-puzzle (with boundary details deferred to analysis of the completed pattern).Be ready to cope with situations not mentioned in the book’s brief instructions; e.g., by using simple geometry. Suppose you have a triangle with its sides replaced by a pair of arrows at each vertex; then hide one vertex and its arrows. Can the remaining info (endpoints of one side, pair of arrows at each of those 2 endpoints) be used to restore the full triangle — why (and how) or why not?The book has full-page black-and-white geometric “solution” outline patterns printed back-to-back on pages 66-95. The puzzles are printed on odd-numbered pages 5 to 63.
