Q: does anyone know the exact dimensions of the clamps?

On the top of your desk, there will be a 7x7cm square, the height of the clamp housing is 11cm and the range that the clamp can move in is 7cm and the metal is about 4mm thick. The underneath part of the clamp is a rounded rectangle around 8cm wide and 4.5cm deep.

Q: anyone has any tips about how to remedy the sliding back?

Make sure you have mounted the shelf level, mine remains where I set it, with no uncommanded sliding. If it is sliding back while you're typing, try a raised wrist rest so that you are not pushing on your keyboard.

Q: i have a shelf under my desk which is 3inches and 3/16th gap, will this slide under ok?

I had to send this back as it did not fit under mine. The wood of the desk was too narrow.
