Q: Is it possible to detach the plastic seed holder from its base to clean under the portholes?

I think you hold the two plastic wings under the base unit that presumably attach to the plastic screw securing the feeding tube and unscrew it but I haven't tried it.

Q: How easy is this to clean?

Very good bird feeder. It is easy to clean using a bird feeder cleaning brush, available on Amazon (and other suppliers). The squirrel guard lifts off to replenish the feeder and gives easy access for cleaning 🧹

Q: is there a peanut feeder in a similar design

Yes. They sell one that is made for peanuts etc. Look for the model they call "squirrel nut" (seriously) on the drop down menu.

Q: Does this work with peanuts

This bird feeder is designed to release seeds via two outlets at the bottom of the inner plastic tube. For peanuts you'll need a similar squirrel proof cage but the inner should be a metal lattice which birds can peck through to get to the peanuts it contains. The feeder is squirrel proof - but birds are reluctant to venture inside to feed. I get the occasional blue tit / long tailed tit / great tit + sparrows & a robin, but not a prolific as were visiting my standard feeder. But then the squirrel would empty it in a few days.
