Useful Tool at a Good Price
I bought this because the third and fourth frets on my banjo unexpectedly popped from the middle to the first string side. This fret setter feels dense and sturdy. And it costs a lot less than one that looks very similar from a well known luthier supply house.I’m glad I didn’t pay a lot, because I actually did not get my frets seated. I believe my hammer was too light and I didn’t hit with enough force. I ended up taking my banjo to a great fret guy who used a setter just like this, a bigger hammer, and more powerful hits. He also leveled and recrowned the first four frets. So I’m sure this setter works in the hands of someone who knows how to use it and isn’t afraid to hit it hard enough.

Good, but a little too hard
Works well, good price, but even using on phosphor bronze frets it can leave marks. On nickel silver be very careful. Fine on stainless steel frets. Right size.

NOT BRASS!!
NOT BRASS... I read the description at the time of posting this review and it says alloy steel, but I THINK the day I bought it it DID NOT say that. I'm pretty sure I would have caught that. But.... I tapped on my brand new STAINLESS frets thinking that brass is softer than stainless and tapped a couple big dents into the stainless frets. I thought maybe I "tapped" a little too hard, and I may have, but that made me start to think, and I grabbed a magnet and was shocked to see it sticking to this "Brass" rod... It's NOT BRASS!!!!

Must have.
Especially getting stainless steel frets to conform to the slot. Very handy above the 12th fret where the frets begin to protect each other from hammer blows. If a fret is lifting you'll likely have fret sprout after using this but that just tells you it did its job. Have your end dressing file handy.

It works okay
It does what it says but I did have to clean it up first because it was leaving marks on the frets I needed to file the edges smooth

This will damage your frets
So, it's steel and has burrs on the radius. It left a slight imprint on a lower fret through some cloth I had down. My biggest gripes was that I had to sand down and deburr the face for it to not dig into the fretboard material.
