The Fotasy M42 Lens to Sony E-Mount Focusing Helicoid Adapter allows photographers to use vintage M42 screw mount lenses on Sony E-mount cameras. Made from lightweight alloy, it features a 32mm focusing distance for macro photography, while maintaining compatibility with a broad range of Sony models. Note that it does not support automatic diaphragm or autofocus functions.

Works
Snug fit, not wobbly, which is good. I’m using with super takumar 1:3.5 28mm m42 on a soby zve10. The retracted distance simply compensates for the difference between the lens mounting plate and the digital sensor which is at the front of the camera, versus the original film camera where the focal plane was at the back of the camera body. This does not compensate for the crop factor of a small aps-c sensor but i get results anyway. Ona crop sensor like zv-e10 or a6000 series, My 28mm lens crops more like a 35mm lens, but this product would produce the original crop factor with a full frame 35mm sensor like a7 series. There are no electronic connections. I still need to calibrate to find where true infinity is, but that’s often necessary with extensions like this. usingg manual focus assist on the camera helps. The telescoping extension screws out like a zoom lens. It doesn’t change the crop much but allows for very close macro focusing. Simple, fairly smooth action but it does friction lock like a tight lid on a jar when retracted and can be hard to budge.

Valuable for super macro
I've been doing general photography for well over 60 years ad often get into astro, macro and micro photography. Using the correct extenders, you can attached microscope objectives using extension tubes along with a T-mount fitted to your mirrorless (and DSLR) camera. The Helicoid Adapter is perfect as part of that setup since it also allows you to adjust the distance from the sensor to the lens without having to remove the setup to add or subtract length. These are well made and should last a long time. Just make sure the base (the part that attaches to your particular camera mount) is the correct one.

Works great on my Sony a7ii!
Fits perfectly on my Sony a7ii. Very solid construction and the focusing ring is a very appreciated feature. I haven't found another adapter quite like this. I'm impressed with the quality of magnification. Do yourself a favor and get this adapter and start collecting m42 lenses. They're super cheap on eBay and provide beautiful bokeh.

Essential for the old lens collector / lens hacker!
Smooth turning, substantial feeling. When retracted a pentax lens on an A7 achieves infinity focus, when extended you can focus closer. But that is boring. What is fun is using this with a M42 to M39 thread adapter, some old pentax screw thread extension tube sets and old enlarging lenses. If you know what to look for there are some amazing lenses out there dirt cheap. Also you can tweak those old fixed focus slide copier gadgets to have adjustable focus for better results, the quality is surprisingly good.Anyway, this is a great addition to the lens hackers toolkit. One other thing. This has no vignetting , unlike m42 to m42 helicoids attached to a thin e mount to m42 adapter. This is much better.

The search for M42 to Nex returns Canon EF to Nex
I wanted to order another M42 to E-mount adaptor, I typed in the search, got the photo and description in the search results, clicked, order, and went on my way. Only when the adaptor arrived did I go back and repeat the procedure, more slowly this time. Sure enough, putting in a search for Fotasy M42 to Nex works, gives an expected result, but when you click through to the full product description, it is the Canon adaptor. Very disappointing. So, on to the device. It is similar to the M42 adaptor, similar build, but it has that less-than-usable button tab thingy on the side to hold the lens. I've not used this one, but all the others are not impressive. The problem is that if the lens is left on the adaptor for a while, it is very difficult to activate the button to release the lens.Otherwise, it is a good enough adaptor, just don't plan on ever removing the lens once it is attached.

Decent for macro, but focuses past infinity.
The mount to the body doesn't have much play, and the twist for macro focusing is solid. There is grease between the focus and the body which is to be expected. I haven't seen any grease on the inside of the barrel, just on the outside. The major issue is that the adapter means that (at least the lenses I've tested) focus past infinity on a Sony E mount. So if you want to focus to infinity you just have to pull it back a bit.

Wobbly but works.
It's true. At least in my experience with the one I'd received, on my a7iii it is rather wobbly and unsure of itself.Pros:- Returns to infinity focus.- Fully extended, easily adjusts to get close focus for macro.- Decent materials with metal mount rings.- Secure fit to camera and M42 lens. No worries there.Cons:- Due to its wobbly nature somewhat extended, feels rather low quality.I dont think the lack of precision in the construction has any effect on images if it seems the lens will tilt when extended. Doesn't seem to be an issueHad not noticed any light leaks, but don't think it's a factor. All in all, a relatively good value for money. Gets you close using a lens you already have eventhough nothing can really substitute for having a real macro lens. Not super impressed, but not super disappointed either.Just meh.3 stars seems fair.

Handy Focus Adapter
love this adapter, I've been using it on my a7c with my ttartisan 1.5 swirly bokeh lens. It is SO convenient having the functionality to be able to twist the adapter to push the lens focus closer for close up portraits, or even super close macro without sacrificing infinity focus or having to swap adapters. Build quality is pretty nice for the price. Threads are smooth and fit and grip the lens's threads nicely. The focusing motion is pretty smooth too, usable for actually pulling focus at close range. The knurled texture design on the focus ring offer nice grip without feeling too sharp. There is a little bit of play in the adapter but i haven't noticed any effect on image quality for my application.
