Housemaid Wanted
“Not many little girls dream of becoming a maid, but this is an opportunity for me to get back on my feet. And for me to revisit my past…”This book sets the MOOD. From the very first sentence, British author Sarah A. Denzil is warning you that you’re about to enter a mysterious and scary environment. The descriptive writing draws the reader into to story so completely, one can actually smell the wood paneling of Highwood Hall and hear the footfalls of those who dwell within its walls.I would call this story a modern gothic tale. Denzil draws inspiration from Jane Eyre, Rebecca, and elements of The Miniaturist. I never felt settled reading this book and I think that’s the idea. I wasn’t ever really sure what was lurking around the corner. There was an major twist that I never saw coming and actually had to go back and reread a few chapters to realize where I was led astray. Once that little gem was revealed, it was darn near impossible to not read the rest of the book.I followed the story with the Audible narration performed by British actress, Sophie Rundle. Sophie’s reading is spot-on, she clearly picked up on the creepiness of the story and embraced her role. Her performance is a five star rating. My only criticism is that the ending was a bit drawn out, and the climax a bit over explained, but this is an amazing story and I’m very much looking forward to reading other novels by Sarah A. Denzil.

Modern Take on Classic…..
Much like classics like Rebecca and Jane Eyre, the setting becomes a key element in the story’s plot and characters. In this case, the residence is an aging mansion, The Howard Family, a wealthy family with dark and mysterious secrets. For a young girl having completed an alcohol and substance abuse program, the opportunity to gain employment at this mansion where she can work and reside offers a step towards a viable future. However, economic practicalities are not the sole reason for her employment position. She knows that although her mother had given her as a six month old baby to her aunt for her to be raised, she had received letters from her mother, letters from the Howard Mansion. So, she arrives hoping to solve the mystery of her mother’s disappearance.Pacing is inconsistent in places, and characters are somewhat predictable or stereotyped, but fast read.

Another GREAT read by Ms. Denzil !
‘21 - READ ‘22 - 4 STARS.DESCRIPTION: “Housemaid Wanted. Skills Required: Discretion and the willingness to go the extra mile”. It seems like the perfect job. Great wages, accommodation provided, and all located within the walls of Highwood Hall, a stunning stately home owned by the Howard Family. But I soon realise I’ve made a mistake. There’s a general atmosphere of unease at Highwood Hall, from the narrow tunnels laced throughout the sprawling house, to the abandoned north wing, rumoured to be haunted. It’s easy to imagine the secrets hidden within these walls.REVIEW: A favorite author of mine. Previous books Little One (‘21 - 4 Stars), The Liar’s Sister (‘19 - Read ‘21 - 4 Stars); Only Daughter ('19 - 4 Stars); Silent Child ('17 - 3 Stars); and a series One for Sorrow, Two for Joy and Three for a Girl (5, 4 & 4 Stars). I caught a sale on this book for $.99; reg 4.99Easy read with lots of creepiness right from the start. The haunting atmosphere of the mansion almost makes it a character in the story; great for Halloween time. The questions and mystery increase with every chapter. Enjoyable read.

Traditions
Her mother was a maid at the big house once, so shae followed that tradition. There was another tradition in that household. A tradition that required them to frequently hire new maids. You will enjoy this quick read.
