Not a Good Substitute for Koi Brush Pens
Great value! But I wasn’t aware of the difference between brush pens that feature a true brush and ones that have a regular pen nib. The brush lettering class I’m taking suggested Sakura’s Koi Brush Pens. I thought these would be a more affordable alternative. However, Koi brushes have a regular, flexible pen bib whereas this set has a true brush tip like a paintbrush. That makes them much harder to use for brush lettering because there’s less control over the tip. Another downside is that there’s no way to tell which brush is which color. They’re not placed in the packaging in the order of the colors shown on the back of the box with the color names. So, you just have to kind of guess which one is which by trying to match it to the color pictured on the box which isn’t always easy. One other downside- even though there are many colors included, some of them are extremely close in color/shade and there aren’t as many of one type of color as there are others. For example, there aren’t as many yellow/orange colors as there are blue/green it seems. My husband is an artist and tried using these pens to create a portrait of a toddler at the beach that he was commissioned to paint. There isn’t any color in the set that matches the light color of the toddler’s skin. He tried mixing some colors together which didn’t work. Then he tried lightening them with more water but he needed so much water to accomplish this that it made the paper dissolve. And it was good quality paper. So, I don’t recommend this set for professionals or for learning brush lettering (I later purchased the Koi pens and prefer them by far for brush lettering. My husband used them to create a set of artist trading cards for a charity project he’s part of and they came out beautifully. The colors are much more vivid and vibrant compared to this set.)

A lot of fun to work with, but they do have a learning curve.
I own two other brands of this type of watercolor brush pen, for the most part, all three are very similar. This set is most similar to another large and popular set out there - I'd say nearly identical in working quality. This type of medium is going to be a learning curve - don't give up! Experiment, play with them, you will get there. The image attached is done entirely with the Genuine Crafts set. It is a bit overworked as I was really pushing them on a thinner multimedia paper to see what I could get them to do and how they would react to things like masking fluid, repeated re-wetting, scrubbing, daubing and multiple layers. Many watercolor techniques are able to be duplicated with these, as well as marker and pen techniques. They do not disappoint, but again, do not react exactly like any other medium, so as mentioned, will require playing with to get a true feel for what they can do.There are 100 colors - some are very close to each other, but this is not a problem for me at least - it allows very gentle gradations of color without a lot of water added.Simply fun to work with, as with my other sets, I see myself using these in multimedia applications. The only downside is that as with all three brands of these I have, the storage cases are pretty much crap. But we aren't paying for the storage cases are we? ;-) I will be looking for a better storage solution, but that does not warrant taking away any stars - an excellent product - highly recommended.

Not so blendy
Love the colors but don't love dry blending. If I draw out line with pen then add water doesn't blend or (dilute if you will)That said on wet it obviously runs. I am enjoying learning ways to use but not what I was looking for.Too many unnecessary colors for my basic self but sale price made sense to get the 100 pack.

Great color selection
Great color selection and the brushes are soft. Easy to blend colors.
