Perfect for draw filing to put a good edge on scissors, hedge trimmers etc.
So far I've only used it to touch up the blades on some large scissors and hedge shears. This is done by holding the blade in a vice and draw filing along the edge of the shearing part of the blade. Any burr on the flat side can be removed by just closing the blades against each other.I learned the technique by watching the YouTube video: "Scissor Sharpening | Paul Sellers". It works. The tools I've used it on have sharpened up nicely. The key to success is holding the file at the correct angle when filing.I have wrapped a length of rubber cut from an old inner tube around the handle; that has made it a little more comfortable to hold.I haven't experimented yet, but I'm going to try using it on a sickle and see how well it does. I imagine that it would do a good job of sharpening the blades on mowers etc. It's probably as much the skill of the user as the quality of the file. The file is a single cut, coarse on one side, medium on the other; that's what you need for this kind of work. The coarse will remove a lot of material if you need to (i.e. the blades are very rusty and pitted or damaged/dented) and the medium will give a good enough finishing cut.

Excellent for a fast, rough edge
Bought to put the beginnings of an edge on an early 1900s bill hook I've just cleaned up and refurbished. Between this and a cigar stone it has worked a treat, it's always nice to bring an old tool back to life and this made the sharpening process a lot quicker than it could have been.I would recommend putting a handle on the tang as it can be a little sharp to hold without gloves but otherwise it's good for the price, sturdy in the hand and feels well made.
