Must buy!
My baby had a tongue tie so breastfeeding wasn’t going all too well to begin with. This efficient and compact pump from medela took the stress away completely. Easy to use, easy to clean and sterilise and put back together again, even during the night when concentration isn’t exactly at its peak. This product was a game changer for us!

Couldn't ask for better.
I needed to express my milk in addition to breast feeding, I get loads of milk in the mornings but I always seem to run low in the afternoons, and my baby gets so frustrated with it, and expressing meant he didn't keep constantly trying to feed on what little bits of milk I had - giving me a chance to catch up with him.I originally bought a cheap manual pump thinking "how hard can it be" but after only a short time having sore grazed nipples and never being able to express more than 2oz with it, I decided to invest in an electric one.I looked at all available models and reviews - and with them all being about the same or not too different in price I went for the Medela Swing because it's a Which best buy and had the best reviews.Ok, so it's not cheap but is it worth it? Well for me yes - it is a godsend! I can express 4oz in about 20 mins which I think is amazing! It's not too loud despite people saying how noisy the electric pumps are, so I can express while he's sleeping and not worry about disturbing him. It's comfortable to use, you can choose the level of suction which is great!Cleaning it is easy, there are minimal parts and they're easy to assemble. The breast shield that comes with the pump seems quite big, I wouldn't consider myself to have small nipples but had to buy the smaller shield as it was sucking some of the areola in (which the manufacturer suggests could be painful with continued use) but shop around for the personal fit shields as I've seen some sellers charging a fortune for them! (Mine cost £12.99 but have seen some for sale at £75!).The Calma teat is brilliant! The baby has to suckle the teat in the same way it would a breast or no milk comes out - this really helps if your baby starts learning to be lazy with normal teats. The only con I can think of; The lead isn't very long so if you're not using it with batteries then you need to be sitting next to a plug socket.Happy well fed baby and no sore nipples!I highly recommend this pump.

Medela Swing, a great buy!
I previously had the Medela Minipump but after only a few months the motor broke so I thought it would be better to invest a bit more and get the Medela swing since I express at least once a day and this is designed for frequent use unlike the mini. I have only had the pump a few months but it is fantastic. Its much quieter than the mini and the double function really does make me express more. With the mini I was only getting 5 oz despite still being quite full. With the swing though, that amount has practically doubled and it empties me a lot more efficiently. It did cost a little bit more than the mini but it is well worth it and as long as the motor stays intact, I plan to use the pump for the next baby! Now my baby is 7 months and moved on to solids so he doesn't feed as much as before but I am still full after a few hours so the pump is a life saver since I tend to get really sore and painful if I don't express. The advice about pumping to keep up your supply seems to have worked for me so far and this is the pump to do it with. I wouldn't spend anymore on the other models since I don't work full time so I don't need to express large quantities.

Express expressing compared with Philips' Electric Pump
My first experience with expressing milk was using Philips AVENT SCF312/01 Electric Breast Pump - well the older version (Isis IQ Uno) which my sister lent to me to try out but after using it a few times and reading through reviews I decided in the end to pay the extra money and purchase the Medela Swing pump for myself. It arrived today and so far I am happy with my decision (though I've only used it once) even though it cost a lot more. This is mainly because it's a lot faster than the Philips pump and that is important. It is very tedious and gets pretty uncomfortable if it takes too long to express a bottle of milk. The suction pattern on the Medela is also smoother though the silicone petal on the Philips does feel nice and soft and the Medela does not have this. Also, the angle of the Medela is much better so one can sit more comfortably while expressing. I also like that Medela include a drawstring bag to keep all of the bits in and two plug types (European and UK/ Ireland). There are aspects of the Medela though that are NOT good in comparison to the Philips which is a much cheaper electric pump and this is a disappointment after forking out the extra:- The Medela does not include a breast shield cover. This would be simple and cheap to do so it is annoying that they don't include one as it would be useful if one had to stop pumping briefly to pick up the baby for instance etc.- The instruction booklet is OK but a little basic. I think it presumes too much knowledge in a first-time mother and requires one to know what one is doing with regard to when to express milk and when/ how it might be helpful to do so (e.g. to relieve engorgement etc.). The Philips includes a helpful little booklet about breastfeeding and more detailed instructions - not essential but a nice touch.- The Medela's parts feel a lot more flimsy and smaller (especially the valve!!) and it is more fiddly to put together, take apart and to clean.- The Medela's motor is separate and connected to the pump via a tube. Perhaps this technology may be what makes it a stronger/ more effective and faster pump than the Philips (I'm speculating here though) but it means that the motor needs to be balanced on one's knees or a table and controlled with one hand while the pump is held in the other hand. The Philips is used one-handed.- The accessories and bottles for the Medela are much more expensive and less widely available than the Philips Avent bottles. That said, I do like the Calma teat. The baby really looked like he was suckling in the same manner as he does on the breast when he was using it (though he had no problem with Philips Avent teats either) and it feels nice and soft. I am more confident that he is less likely to have nipple confusion when he returns to the breast after using this teat which will be less painful for me! The teat is more fiddly and awkward to clean though as it needs to be taken apart - is in three bits.So overall, there are areas where Medela falls down which is disappointing given the big price difference between the two products but ultimately it seems to express milk faster and more effectively and for me, this makes it worth getting.
