must not miss read
This novel won awards in France for a description of Putin's use of communication for his rise to power as "narrated" by his former communications chief. Great insights and very timely read. So well written. Can't recommend it enough

Insightful Dive into Kremlin's Shadow Figures: A Review of 'The Wizard of the Kremlin'
The Wizard of the Kremlin" by Giuliano da Empoli offers a fascinating exploration into the political landscape of Russia through the eyes of its influential advisors. The book delves into the lives and thoughts of key figures who have played a pivotal role in shaping the country's direction under Vladimir Putin's regime. What stands out in da Empoli's work is his meticulous research and ability to present complex political maneuvers in an engaging, almost novelistic style, making it accessible to a broad audience.Da Empoli paints a vivid picture of the Kremlin's inner workings, focusing on the strategists and ideologists rather than Putin himself. This approach provides a fresh perspective on Russian politics, diverging from the typical focus on Putin's personality. The author’s exploration of these advisors' philosophical and ideological underpinnings is particularly enlightening, revealing how their views on Eurasianism, Orthodoxy, and Russian exceptionalism have influenced state policies. One of the book's strengths is its detailed character profiles, which bring the advisors' personalities and motivations to life. Da Empoli's writing is informative and engaging, balancing academic rigor and narrative drive. This makes the book not just a scholarly analysis but also a captivating read. However, readers seeking a more direct critique of Putin's policies might find the book's focus on advisors somewhat tangential. Also, those unfamiliar with Russian political history may need to refer to additional sources for context, as da Empoli assumes a certain level of background knowledge.Overall, "The Wizard of the Kremlin" is a compelling read that offers valuable insights into the ideological forces shaping modern Russia. It's an essential book for anyone interested in understanding the complexities of Russian politics beyond the surface-level portrayal of its leaders.

The making of Putin's Russia
Very interesting take on Putin's rise to power. Sarcastic depiction of Russian culture in the last 150 years

My Review # Two!
This beautifully written, descriptive novel affords one an insight into the psyche of the Russian people and how their history and values influence their choices. #2: I am now about half-way through. I find myself reading so eagerly! I am underlining phrases that I savor as well as noting things I need to look up as some of the people, places, and situations from the 90's I don't remember that well or never even knew about! I am fascinated by this book!

Great summary of Putins rise
In form of fiction. Not riveting but definitely very interesting take on how Russia has changed under Putin and what it means for the future which is pretty bleak Lots of taking but little action.

is it fiction?
Giuliano da Empoli’s articulation of Putin’s thinking is crisp, scary, and believable. Chaos is a committed outcome. He lucidly lays out the links to Russian history.
