best tasting camping beef stew
It is imply the best tasting camping beef stew I ever had. It is even higher quality than freshly made beef stew.

It’s difficult to find MRE’s that are on the healthy side.Therese have a good amount of protein with a low sugar. The flavor is ok, the meat is a little bit bitter. The cheese rehydrates well. It’s state two serving but it’s more like one. I will continue to explore there products.

These are OKAY
I started to hate these after eating them on my thru-hike. The texture isn't amazing, the flavor could also use some improvement, specifically the gravy/beef flavor is not fantastic. The great value at my time of purchase was the main motivator for purchasing.

Would Give Zero Stars If Possible
Backpacker’s Pantry food pouches have a reputation as a hit-and-miss budget backpacking food. The Shepherd’s Potato Stew With Beef was my latest experience with the brand.I’ve had previous experiences with Backpacker’s Pantry products, (rarely pleasant experiences), but since I enjoy real shepherds pie, I decided to give them one more try. The freeze-dried product appeared to consist mostly of ground-up mashed potato flakes with some vegetables added, prior to reconstitution. An extremely strong smell of onion was the only odor evident before adding water and sealing the pouch.I learned from past experience that the water recommendations which the Backpacker’s Pantry products cite are overstated, thus lead to a soupy, near-liquid consistency, so it is important to use between 2-6oz less of hot water when reconstituting the product. Backpacker’s pantry recommends 2.25 cups of boiling water (18 oz) when reconstituting the shepherds potato stew with beef. Using caution derived from previous experiences, I added only 14 oz, stirred vigorously before resealing the pouch, and allowed the product to sit for 25 minutes (5-10 minutes longer than the time recommended on the package). The reduction of water, and the extended reconstitution time made no difference. The resulting product consistency was a liquid, soupy mess, with little other than a few tiny vegetables and an occasional half-dime sized chunks of ground beef available to chew. Without a spoon, this is impossible to consume, and even then the pouch full of broth/liquid would be easier to drink than to eat. There is only one flavor evident in this product: onion. Like other Backpacker’s Pantry products, they attempt to overcome bland offerings by overwhelming their dishes with enormous amounts of onion and garlic, a seasoning issue you won’t find with some other brands of freeze-dried foods. We consumed a small portion of the packet nearly 7 hours ago (we couldn’t choke-down more than approximately 4 spoonfuls each before discarding the rest), and after almost 4 quarts of assorted water and sports drinks each, we cannot remove the aftertaste of onion from our mouths (particularly unpleasant on a long hike).I ordered a 6-pack, and now seriously regret it since I’ve learned that returns are not permissible. The remaining 5 will be thrown in the garbage, since I will not donate these to a food pantry and force others to suffer as they attempt to ingest this barely-edible, poor-quality product.I have hesitated to offer reviews of Backpacker’s Pantry products in the past, since I choose to vote with my spending, and simply buy better-quality products from their competitors, but this experience was so bad, that I wouldn’t want to see anyone repeat it without at least some advance notice of what they may encounter. The moral of the story is: buyer beware. There are better-quality products out there…do your research prior to purchase, and you’ll find the right freeze-dried pouches for you.Good luck!
