Not great on shaggy rugs You have to make your property robot friendly in regards to not leaving anything out that could get sucked up

Yes! There is a button “Clean” in the app that starts the robot immediately.

Q: What can you do with the mobile app? Whats the range it works (e.g. bluetooth)?

Actually most things you need the mobile app! You can use it wherever you like in the world. So you can start the robot when you get to work. As long as your phone has a data connection to the internet.Typically you will set your schedule (not more than once per day) and see when you need to clean out the various parts of the robot. If there is an error, the app will tell you what the error is and how to fix it.

Q: does this robot randomly move around or does it work out which bits haven't been cleaned?

It scans the entire area and will vacuum all - very rarely misses bits. It has a spot clean function that focuses on one area for spillages etc. It quite easily one of the best things I have ever bought. Far surpasses any other vacuum I have bought. It does actually confuse me how it navigates and the order it vacuums but it always gets the job done.
