Q: Whats the inside clearance depth top to bottom of the 3 drawers? Or another way of asking is how thick of an object could i place inside the drawer?

2 and 1/8th inches from bottom of drawer to top. That allows about 2 or 3 millimeters of clearance before dragging...probably very safe with 2 inch thick object-this applies to all three drawers. Additionally the slot below top is 2 and 1/2 inch from where item lays to top (ceiling). Top tray is only 1 and 1/8th from bottom to very top

Q: can it hold letter or legal size documents?

The top two shelves have an inside dimension of 12 in. wide by 9 7/8 in. deep. Fits letter size very well.

Q: Is the back of this unit finished so it can be displayed or does it need to be placed against a wall?

Unfortunately, I am out of town at the moment and can't answer your question 100%, but if I recall, it was finished all over. The unit is quite nice and comes packaged well. I don't believe that any of the sides were left unfinished. (Mine is placed against a wall, though, and I'm not around the unit to check for you.) You could always return it if you don't like it, but I LOVE mine. It's SO much nicer than the crappy plastic organizers you see at the office supply stores.
