American Art Clay Sculptamold 3 lb Bag

It took me a little while to try this popular product, but now it is a mandatory item in my model railroad workshop.Sculptamold is a plaster-based product with added fibers so it goes through several stages of curing where the material can be worked in different ways. Initially the material has a consistency of cottage cheese. In this condition, the Sculptamold can be placed on the terrain and roughly formed to get the basic shape of what you want to achieve. It sticks to vertical surfaces pretty well - at least with foam - and will be very soft, lumpy and uneven.As the material starts to harden - within 2-4 minutes - it becomes more like clay. It is harder to form and sculpt as time goes on, so you want to get your contours done quickly. Once you do that, you can start to add more detail, and add feathering and smoothing. To smooth the material, wet your hands and rub the surface of the material. The plaster will come to the surface and gradually flatten the surface you are rubbing. The material sets up fast enough that I like to work in smaller sections and plan out what i want to accomplish before mixing the material. It's very easy to add more material; and you can start adding more as soon as your done sculpting the previous batch - you don't have to wait for it to fully dry.The material will set up quickly, but it can take a while to fully harden. During that time, you can easily scribe and press the surface to add small amounts of texture. When it hardens, it's very hard; but that can take 24-48 hours, or longer with very thick applications. It doesn't slow me down much.Amazing product. I use it more for terrain and large voids, not so much for detailed gap filling. Five stars!

I bought this to use in my Woodland Scenic rock molds. It was easy to mix and use. I think the rocks turned out well.

If you're interested in making dioramas then this is a must buy. It helps cover cracks and creates texture. I use it for tabletop gaming. It has lots of durability and is easy to work with. It dries relatively quickly. It takes paint beautifully. No need to second guess. Just get it.

This stuff is amazing but you need to be smart. Lay on in thin layers, use just enough water or it may take too long to cure and place somewhere where the temperature is steady so it can dry out evenly and not let mold set in. On another note, I'd recommend if you are using a lot do multiple projects to buy in bulk as the price comes down.

Easy to sculpt with and it dries quickly. I have not used as a mold. Only for landscape sculpting. It makes a lot of dust when it is mixed with water. Its expensive on amazon though. Much cheaper elsewhere.

Sculptamold will take on many different properties depending on the amount of water added to it. Dries fast and hard, and can be easily drilled or punched into with nail. Look at 2 pics that used Sculptamold to build Tree Trunk form and texture, as well as Rock face and Cliff. This material also takes either waterbased or oil paint very well.

Great model making product. Using a craft knife makes the application cleaner. Sets in about 20 mins. Could take more than a day to dry depending on thickness.

Great product, but should not be shipped with other ordered items, which arrived covered in white Scuptamold powder.
