So Far, So Good
I bought this to replace another B&S Intek that came on a 28" Snapper rear-engine rider I bought used. I couldn't get the old engine, which looked like it had seen some hard use, to run smoothly, so I decided to replace it. After clicking around on the B&S website I found a link to send an e-mail to ask which engine I should get for my intended application. Within an hour I got a response that said this is the one I needed. I ordered it, & it was at my house in less than 3 days.I followed a YouTube video by dieselworld that showed him putting a very similar engine on a very similar mower. I ran into some confusion, though, b/c there are more wires coming off this engine than the old one. This engine has a wire for the carb solenoid, which the old engine didn't have, so I didn't know what to do. There are YT vids that show how to disable small engine carb solenoids, but I really didn't want to do that. The old engine & the new one both had Nikki carbs, so I got the idea of simply switching carb bowls, which worked just fine. Problem solved. :^)I had trouble getting the engine to start after I got everything hooked up. I finally figured out that it was b/c I somehow flooded it. My fault, easy fix. Once I got that straightened out, my 14-yr.-old daughter was able to start it w/ 1 pull after I showed her how. That being the case, I'm not even going to bother replacing my dead mower battery, at least not for now.Today I used it to mow my yard for the 1st time, & it performed flawlessly. Hopefully I'll get years of trouble-free service out of it. I'll amend this review if anything significant comes up.IMPORTANT: This engine comes w/out oil in it, so it's on you to put some in before you start it. My experience w/ small engines is that the owner's manual calls for a little more than the engine actually needs. The manual for this one says 42 to 44 oz. I started out w/ 40, ran it for a few minutes, waited a couple more, then checked it. Right on the money. If you start off w/ what the manual suggests, you'll probably end up having to take some back out, which is a hassle. Also, don't forget or neglect to change the oil after the 1st 5 hrs. of operation. After that, it's every 50 hrs. or once a year. Happy mowing! ;^)P.S. If you're planning to use this engine for a Snapper rear-engine rider, then save your muffler, b/c the one on this engine won't work. There's not enough clearance between the muffler & one of the bars that enable you to stand the mower on end. You could simply remove the bar, but I was unwilling to do that, b/c the ability to stand up a Snapper RER is one of my favorite features of the mower. In order to preserve that feature you'll need to swap the mufflers, which, unfortunately, is a real pain. :^(

Lawn tractor wiring
The engine replaced my 1980’s vintage Craftsman engine. The balance of the 38” lawn tractor was solid, so I gave this engine a try.The wiring harness needed an upgrade in order to run the carburetor solenoid. It took a while to figure out the wiring. I started with the tractors instruction manual which had the old wiring harness diagram. The 3 position key switch was a problem - no contact for the carburetor solenoid. So, I ended up running a diode from the switch red colored wire from the key switch RUN terminal (used new red battery charge wire from engine) to the grey carburetor solenoid wire. This gives the carb 12 VDC in the RUN position.I ran a second diode from the key switch START terminal at the starter solenoid input wire harness (white harness wire in my case) to the grey carburetor solenoid wire. This gives the carburetor solenoid 12 VDC in the START position.Black wire from key switch OFF position terminal to black engine magneto wire.Large red wire to starter.Made the harness very neat to finish up.The engine started and runs fine.I must mention I could not get the original double pulley off the old engine. I bought a new pulley to simplify my installation.

With minor modifications, it fits a snapper SR one028. This lawnmower is 22 years old.
I would give five stars for how fast it showed up.NO technical support also when the engine showed up with a broken dipstick and dipstick tube, I was a little less than happy! What Oil that was in the engine made a mess inside the box that wasn’t visible until I opened the box.I called the seller and they wanted me to send pictures. I was already at dealer who I bought the lawnmower from and I was able to go into the junk pile and found an engine similar to this with the exact dipstick and tube needed.I simply cleaned it up and installed it on the new engine. So instead of a yellow dipstick cap, I now have a black one, no big deal. The seller seemed annoyed and skeptical to put a kindly.Five stars for the fact that I was able to do it myself and revive a lawnmower that we have a lot of memories with. Both our children drove that lawnmower, and it was kind of a part of our life as silly as that sounds..After over 22 years the the 10 hp Briggs & Stratton flathead engine, dropped a valve mutilating the block and bending the valve and breaking the valve spring even.I purchased this as a crate engine replacement. it came with electronic ignition fuel pump and even a cut off solenoid for the carburetor fuel bowl. The wiring in my lawnmower did not have provisions for that cut off.So now, instead of turning off the fuel to the carburetor when we’re done with the mower, we simply just turn of a toggle switch and it removes the power drain from the battery and shut off fuel to the carburetor as it is spring loaded shut.Great Briggs & Stratton. I was glad to see the engine, and the majority of its components are from the USA!There have been some rumors of problems, but knock on wood. This engine has trouble been free so far.I intend to change the oil after about less than five hours of usage. With some minor changes and adapting, it’s almost a plug-in play engine.Looking at the cost of new lawnmowers and knowing where all those engines come from and sometimes even the entire mowers from China, the quality doesn’t stack up to what was available in the 2001.Since I’ve owned this mower since new, I’ve always kept it in good shelter, well lubricated and cleaned. It was worth putting a new engine on.Just note, this seller is just that, a seller! If you have any technical questions, you will not get any answers from the seller that makes sense..If you call Briggs & Stratton their first question is, “did you buy it from us”!?If you tell them, no, I bought it on Amazon. They will hang up on you!!!If you say yes, they want you to prove it, that you purchased the engine through Briggs & Stratton!!I don’t understand that, it’s still a Briggs & Stratton engine that came from them and one way or another. But you bought it from “Amazon” there is no technical support so get used to it!!My local dealer who I purchased the lawnmower from wanted $950 for the same engine that’s $650 here.So if you wanted technical support, you can pay the extra money and buy it from your local Powersports dealer. I just had to get a little creative with the wiring, other than that everything was plugged and play.Prime delivery was nice, but one way or another you pay for it! No support.
