Björn Ironside: Viking Warrior (Viking Warriors Book 2)

I know hardly anything about Viking or Norse culture, so this book was particularly insightful. For example, I had no idea Glima (a Nose martial art) even existed. While it is helpful to have a lot of background information about Norse culture, a lot of this biography that is about Bjorn Ironside is actually a general history of that era in order to give context to the events surrounding Bjorn’s life. It is interesting to discern how much is actually true about Thor, and what details have been embellished to make him seem more mystical and god-like.One interesting piece of trivia included in the book is that J.R.R. Tolkien included Norse names, locations, and culture into his literary creations of Middle Earth.This biography about Bjorn Ironside is incredibly interesting historically and culturally, and contains many themes also present in great works of literature. I think everyone will find something of value in this book.

The reader is permitted to take a deeper look at Scandinavian and Norse contexts through the lenses of their pagan myths, legends, and customs. It is an accessible read with a great deal of significant elements, such as Bjorn Ironside’s invasion of Europe, The era of Christian conversion in Rome and the well-known tales of his reign as King of Sweden. It is a mild anthropological look into the cultural context of Bjorn Ironside as a conqueror, husband, King and an icon of heroism in ancient Norse customs.I would highly recommend this read if you have any interest in learning about the culture and customs of ancient Europe.

I purchased this wanting to know more about Bjorn Ironside. I read the whole book in 30 minutes. It is large print with big margins. Not worth $9.99. Any information or insight the book has is nothing more in depth, than a quick google search would provide. The book is trying to ride the coat tails of the Vikings TV show.

I was disappointed in the size of book. Not many pages. Read whole book in half an hour. Didnt learn anything that I didn't already knew.

The book had interesting information but it felt more like a high school essay filled with fluff and repeated statements to fill pages. I also didn’t feel like I learned much about Bjorn himself as the book mostly just talked about the culture and history of his time rather then give much information on the person himself.

As a student of history I found this text to be interesting, informative and well written.

Good overview of the life of Bjorn Ironside. Granted not muchi inormation is known butt author spells out an interesting story nevertheless.

This is why I gave the book 4 stars. I am of >50% Scandinavian heritage (mainly Norwegian.) I remember close to 30 years ago first reading of Viking customs, of the blood eagle and funeral rites which really turned me off, to say the least. I guess it is "history." I like knowing about their love of board games :-) and martial arts.
