FreezCube Freezer Alert Frozen Food Safety Monitor, 1-Each

We bought a freezer for the basement we only access once or twice a week. For peace of mind we wanted to get something that could tell us if we lost power. With only two reviews and a $10 price we took a leap of faith based on the design. And we bought two because if it worked as we hoped we would keep one in the upstairs fridge/freezer too. We have not been disappointed. It works because it is so simple and we have been happy. We use ours in the freezer section and we do see some leakage from the coldest (blue) color but it doesn't all drain down so we believe we are good. We have checked with a freezer thermometer too and the temperature is accurate. Simple and effective like most good products and we can recommend it. A sturdy plastic enclosure that will take some abuse but wouldn't suggest dropping on a hard floor as it would likely crack. Now a permanent fixture in our freezers and glad we made the purchases.

I have had this product for 6 months. I needed a low-tech solution. This item let me down and while doing so removed $20 from my wallet. All colors melted except the red. So, I turned my freezer colder below the manufacture's recommended setting thinking it was too warm, same result. I returned my freezer to the manufacture's recommended setting for energy efficiency thinking I could simply rely on the red and if the red is melted, I know not to eat anything. After leaving it in my freezer for 2 months it now looks like an evaporated pink-ish color. It's not even red anymore. It's useless. I believe the item is made by an European company, maybe they keep their freezers below zero and this item works for them. I know it doesn't work well for American freezer settings, or a least not mine. I don't recommend this item at all.

This is in theory a great tool for people who leave home on long vacations, etc. If liquid melts, it flow to the bottom and tell you the power went out, or the freezer is on the fritz, and how long it's safe to eat the food. I am not quite convinced it's 100% accurate, because it almost always has a little trickle of blue in the bottom. I'll keep experimenting.

I have used this product on all the freezers I have now, letting it thaw and return to room temperature before moving it to the next freezer. I just wanted to confirm all of my freezers were in fact freezing at a low enough temperature to be safe. One freezer was not and we will be getting rid of that one. I now have it in a freezer we don't use all the time, out in husbands shop so I will know when we do get something out of it, that it is still safe. It is not affected by the automatic defrost cycle on the freezer too which is good. I will now purchase more of them to keep in the other working freezers.

I have a chest freezer with a LaCrosse wireless temperature monitor. It keeps constant track of the temperature and sends me alerts via email and text if it gets too hot. It has NEVER gotten too hot. I followed the instructions on the FreezCube and a few days later I checked it. Every single color had partially melted - indicating a complete failure of the freezer. Totally wrong. More than two months later we are still eating our beef from that freezer. Nobody has gotten sick, and the meat has always come out rock hard solid and painfully cold, I have tried resetting the FreezCube a few times per the instructions, but it always does the same thing.

My home frequently loses power while I away. When I return to evidence of a power outage (melted-refrozen ice cream on the bottom of the freezer) I know for sure it's time to toss refrigerator contents. Without ice cream in the freezer, I may not know extent of the power outage. This device gives a simple and easy way to know if you need to toss your food.10/2014 Update:Once device melted I could not get either (purchased 2 units) to completely freeze again after electric was turned back on. Reduced rating and not recommended.

It must really take an industrial freezer to get this thing fully frozen. One of the parts of it never freezes, though the freezer is very cold. It will make you doubt whether your freezer is working as it should.
