Excellent charging/audio dock with remote control.
This is a great 30 pin charging/playback dock. Just get a 3.5,audio plug cable to 2 RCA plugs (not included) and you can play this through just about any existing stereo that has inputs for an external source. It comes with a fairly short connecting Apple cable and a power adaptor to plug into any outlet. This will not work on newer Apple items with the lightning hookup, unless you find a suitable adaptor. IPod 7th generation will not work for anything other than charging with a simple 30 pin to lightning adaptor. It is possible to jury-rig adaptors, but it will not be a simple matter to use the newest IPod .A 30 pin to lightning pin adaptor, 30 pin extender (to lift the IPod Nano high enough to insert a 3.5 audio cable into it), and a 3.5 audio plug cable to 2 RCA plugs will work for a newer IPod, but this dock was meant more for previous IPods using the older 30 pin hookup. The remote on this may be very familiar to you, if you have a similar remote with your IMac. It is a straight-forward, simple remote that does a great job.I have bought and used quite a few IPod docks for charging and audio playback (with remote controls) and this is the best one. I also have a similar Apple dock with a smaller, white plastic remote control that is just as good. For charging and listening to your Ipod tunes through an existing stereo, this is about as good as it gets. Nothing fancy! Just does what you need and very well.

Almost there...
I have a iPod Nano 5 which I connect to a stereo. Since the headphone jack is located very closely to the charger jack, it is almost impossible to find an audio cable that can be plugged in while the iPod charges. I was hoping to use the docking station to solve this problem. I was also excited about the remote control. The product works OK and it appears well made, looks nice and is heavy enough, but there are a few annoyances which may not necessarily be the fault of the docking station if the iPod does not allow certain things.- Menu button is more than useless: It takes you back to a menu, but the remote does not allow navigation in menus, even though all the required buttons seem to be on the remote. So, you have to walk to the iPod and re-select whatever you wanted it to do before you pressed the button.- iPod is sunk so far into the station that the wheel on the iPod is somewhat hard to use. Unfortunately, you have to walk back to the iPod quite frequently to fix accidental mistakes when using the remote.- The wheel on the remote does not allow circular motions like the iPod, so it is not as intuitive as it could be.- Unless the remote and your iPod are "paired", the iPod screen will turn on for no reason with almost any remote, e.g. TV switch channel. Not sure why the charger cannot simply check for a valid command before switching on the screen.- Charging does not seem very "smart". The iPod does not seem to like it when permamently plugged in and loses charge.Overall, this is probably still the best solution out there, but it is disappointing to see that it could easily be so much better...

Really nice piece- quality is evident, well worth the extra couple of $
I have many ipod docks- Sony, Belkin, Phillips, and now this one from/by Apple. The quality (I know, subjective term) is immediately apparent (I know- split infinitive) when you un-package everything. The dock is heavy, in a good way; rigid, in a good way, well-packed, sleek and simple, in a good way. It connected beautifully to an AUX (RCA) port on my garage bookshelf system and sounds great. It also charges my ipod (gen 3 touch) perfectly and quickly. The remote feels delicate in hand, but it too is very solid- no creaks or flex when you man-handle it and controls work perfectly. The "system" was a bit pricey (just over $30) compared to some other docks on the market, but I was having trouble finding versions that I at least thought would charge my old gen 3. Well worth the extra $10 or so over competitors. Couldn't be happier. Driveway basketball and frustrating auto work are now set to music! MY music, not the FM broadcast crap. If you need a dock for an older ipod (at least a 3rd Touch), get one of these before they're all gone or make a ridiculous offer for mine.NOTE: I connected this dock with Monster Cable 126130 - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000068IH5?redirect=true&ref_=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_64 . A perfect pairing.

Bad Apple Dock
I am surprised Apple did not make their docks control the IPOD completely. You have minimal control over the functions of the IPOD on the Remote Control. The volume to external speaker is controlled by the output volume of the IPOD not the volume buttons on the external speaker. Also it appears that the IPOD is not even charging on the dock properly. I love the Apple IPOD's but they have lots of work to do their docks. Sorry Apple you loose on this product.

Universal Dissapointment
Stopped working after a few times of playing. I teach line dancing and used the dock to run into the RCA jacks to the speaker. Now I just go from the ipod into the jacks. The remote control was a nice feature when it worked. Apple normally produces great stuff.

Apple, I am disappoint.
I knew that I was taking a chance when purchasing this item. I wanted a little dock that I could use to hookup the iPod to my home stereo -- I expected this dock would have a "line out" output; it doesn't, the output is the same as you'd get out of the headphone jack.Although having a remote to control the iPod is super (even though it only controls volume and back/forth tracks, not menu functions for the iPod Classic), the signal quality to my stereo isn't what I'd want out of a $30 product .. so I ended up purchasing this instead: 3.5mm Audio Line Out + 30pin Usb Dock Cable for Iphone Ipod , and it does have actual "line out" output, for high-quality sound out of your stereo. If you follow the link, you'll see my review, along with others. In addition, there are no dock adapters in this package that fit my iPod classic (160GB edition). That's probably because this item was manufactured before the Classic came out.
